Chapter 5 - The Shadows in Belize

The sweet taste of public vindication did not distract me from the cold reality of the financial mess Ethan had left behind.
Early Wednesday morning, I arrived at the Apex Design headquarters. The atmosphere in the office was surreal. Junior architects and project managers stood in hushed clusters near the water coolers, parting like the Red Sea as I walked down the hall toward the executive corner office that had once belonged to Ethan.
His name had already been unscrewed from the frosted glass door, leaving four small, raw holes in the paneling.
Inside, two forensic IT specialists and an investigator named Sarah Lin—hired by Marcus Vance—were combing through Ethan’s desktop computer and hard drives.
“Find anything useful?” I asked, shutting the door behind me.
Sarah Lin looked up from her dual-monitor setup. She was a woman in her late thirties with razor-sharp eyes and a reputation for uncovering money hidden by the world’s most deceitful oligarchs.
“Madison, your husband wasn’t just a cheat,” Sarah said, turning a monitor toward me. “He was being played for a colossal fool.”
I pulled up a chair and sat down. “What do you mean?”
“The six point four million dollars sent to C&E Developments in Belize?” Sarah brought up a complex diagram of corporate entities. “Ethan thought he owned fifty percent of that company alongside Chloe Vane. But look at the corporate articles filed in Belmopan.”
She clicked on a PDF.
“C&E Developments isn’t Chloe and Ethan. It’s Chloe and *Enrique*. Enrique Vane—Chloe’s older brother, who operates an unlicensed mezzanine finance outfit out of Miami.”
I stared at the screen. “Ethan wasn’t even a listed shareholder?”
“Not a single share,” Sarah confirmed with a cold chuckle. “Chloe had him wire the money into an escrow account under the pretext that the funds would be used as collateral to secure a thirty-million-dollar high-yield private loan from her father’s network. She told him that once the loan cleared, Apex would have enough independent capital to buy out you and the institutional investors, giving Ethan one hundred percent control of the firm.”
“And the money?”
“The moment the six point four million hit Belize, it was routed through three different shell companies in the Cayman Islands, converted into unhosted crypto wallets, and liquidated,” Sarah said. “Ethan didn’t steal that money to build an empire with his mistress. Chloe used Ethan’s desperation and narcissism to cover her family’s massive real estate debts in South Florida.”
A hollow laugh escaped my throat.
Ethan had destroyed his marriage, risked twenty years in federal prison, forged my signature, and humiliated himself publicly—all for a woman who had treated him like a mark in a high-stakes confidence scam.
“Can we recover the funds?” I asked.
“The Belize funds are tied up in international crypto networks; it’ll take months of litigation,” Sarah admitted. “However, there’s a catch. Chloe made a catastrophic mistake.”
Sarah pulled up another file.
“Chloe used an Apex corporate credit card to pay the hosting fees and registration taxes for the Belize shell company. That establishes direct legal nexus within the jurisdiction of the Northern District of Illinois. That makes it interstate wire fraud and grand larceny.”
“Which means?”
“Which means Chloe Vane isn’t just facing a civil lawsuit,” Sarah said, leaning back with a predatory grin. “She’s facing a federal indictment. And if Ethan wants to avoid being indicted as her co-conspirator, his only option is to turn state’s evidence against her.”
Before I could answer, my desk phone buzzed.
It was the reception desk downstairs.
“Mrs. Cole? Mr. Ethan Cole is in the lobby. He doesn't have security clearance, but he’s causing a major disturbance. He’s demanding to speak with you. He says if you don't come down, he’s going to call the press.”
I looked at Sarah, then down at the files proving Ethan had been swindled by his own mistress.
“Send him up, Frank,” I told the receptionist. “And have two building security officers stand outside my door.”
Five minutes later, the door flew open.
Ethan stumbled into the room.
He looked like a ghost of the man who had walked out on me forty-eight hours ago. His eyes were wild and hollow, his face unshaven, his designer shirt wrinkled and stained with sweat.
“You ruined me!” Ethan roared, slamming the door behind him. “The press is camped outside the Drake! My bank accounts are frozen! My cards were declined at breakfast! The partners won’t take my calls! Madison, what kind of sick monster are you?!”
I sat calmly behind the desk, my hands folded over the folder Sarah had just handed me.
“Have you spoken to Chloe today, Ethan?” I asked softly.
The question caught him completely off guard. His rage stuttered.
“What does Chloe have to do with this?! Chloe is standing by me! She’s at her apartment right now coordinating with her family’s legal team!”
“Is she?” I slid the folder across the desk toward him.
Ethan hesitated, staring at the folder as if it were a venomous snake. “What is this?”
“That is the corporate registration of C&E Developments,” I said evenly. “Take a look at the shareholder registry, Ethan. Look for your name.”
Trembling, Ethan reached out and flipped the folder open.
His eyes scanned the pages. Once. Twice.
He flipped frantically through the subsequent documents, his breathing turning shallow and ragged.
“No… this is wrong,” he muttered, shaking his head in violent denial. “This is a mistake. Chloe said we were equal partners. She had me sign the operating agreement…”
“You signed a fake agreement, Ethan,” I said, my voice dripping with cold reality. “Just like you forged a fake post-nup for me. Chloe and her brother Enrique took your six point four million dollars and used it to pay off their family’s criminal debts in Miami. You weren't her future husband. You were her golden goose.”
“No!” Ethan shouted, dropping the papers as if they were burning his skin. “You fabricated this! You’re trying to turn me against her because you’re jealous! Chloe loves me! She told me I was the only man who ever truly understood her!”
I picked up Ethan’s secondary phone from my desk—the phone I had taken from his closet safe.
I had had Sarah Lin extract the data.
I pressed play on an audio recording extracted from Chloe’s cloud backup from two nights ago—recorded while Ethan was in the bathroom at The Velvet Room.
Chloe’s voice came through the speaker, crisp, bored, and dripping with contempt:
*“Yeah, Enrique, the wire cleared today. The idiot actually signed the transfer. He thinks we’re running away to Europe together. God, he’s pathetic. He won’t stop whining about how his wife doesn't appreciate his genius. I have to spend two more days playing loving girlfriend until the funds settle in the Cayman accounts, and then I’m blocking his number and flying down to Miami.”*
The recording clicked off.
The silence that followed was suffocating.
Ethan staggered backward until his spine hit the glass wall. His jaw hung open, his eyes wide and completely unseeing.
The betrayal he had inflicted on me had been returned to him tenfold, delivered by the very hands he had traded his life for.
“She… she played me?” Ethan whispered, sinking down until he was kneeling on the carpet of his former office. “She never loved me?”
I stood up, walking around the desk to stand over him.
May you like
“She saw you for exactly what you are, Ethan,” I said, looking down at the broken shell of my husband. “A vain, insecure man who would betray the person who built him up just to feel like a king for one night.”
