Chapter 6 - The Unraveling of Sloane Mercer

By Monday afternoon, the pressure had shifted entirely to a small luxury apartment complex in Buckhead.

Sloane Mercer sat on a velvet sofa in the penthouse of the Rosewood building, staring at three large packing boxes that sat half-filled on the marble floor. Her phone was ringing constantly on the glass coffee table.

She picked it up, saw the name Grant Bennett, and let it go to voicemail.

Her inbox was an absolute wasteland. The brand sponsorships she had secured as a rising Atlanta lifestyle influencer had collapsed overnight. Three boutique maternity brands had terminated their contracts by email before dawn, citing morality and conduct clauses. The comments on her social media accounts were so vicious that she had been forced to deactivate her profiles entirely.

A sharp knock sounded at the door.

Sloane jumped, her hand flying to her throat. She crept to the door and looked through the peephole.

Standing in the hallway was not Grant, but two women. One was Maya Rhodes, holding an accordion folder. The other was a uniformed process server wearing a badge from the Fulton County Marshal's Office.

Sloane opened the door an inch, the security chain remaining in place. "What do you want? I told you people to leave me alone! I’m pregnant, I’m under medical distress—"

"Miss Mercer," Maya said calmly, stepping forward so her face was clearly visible. "I am Maya Rhodes, counsel for Claire Bennett and Bennett Crest Development. This is Deputy Marshal Davis. We are here to execute an immediate writ of possession and asset seizure for this premises."

"Writ of what?" Sloane stammered, her eyes darting between Maya and the armed deputy. "Grant owns this place! He bought it for me!"

"Grant Bennett does not own this property," Maya replied, holding up a certified court document bearing a red seal. "Rosewood Holdings LLC owns this property. And as of nine o'clock this morning, Judge Harrison granted emergency receivership of Rosewood Holdings to the primary creditor, Claire Bennett."

Deputy Marshal Davis stepped up beside Maya, his voice deep and authoritative. "Ma'am, you have thirty minutes to collect your personal clothing and medication. All furnishings, artwork, jewelry purchased with Rosewood funds, and vehicles registered to the corporate entity are subject to an immediate freeze."

"Thirty minutes?" Sloane shrieked, tears finally spilling over her mascara. "You can't kick me out! I’m seven months pregnant! That’s illegal!"

"What is illegal, Miss Mercer," Maya said, her tone devoid of emotion, "is accepting two hundred and forty thousand dollars in direct wire transfers from a commercial escrow account without providing any legitimate goods or services. That is classified as receipt of stolen property under Georgia Code Section 16-8-7."

Maya pulled a second sheet of paper from her folder.

"We have also filed a formal request with the Fulton County District Attorney’s office regarding the forged subcontracting agreements bearing your signature as an authorized agent for Rosewood. If you cooperate quietly today, Mrs. Bennett has instructed me not to seek immediate criminal warrants against you, pending the outcome of the corporate audit."

Sloane’s knees seemed to buckle. She gripped the edge of the doorframe, her knuckles white. "Where am I supposed to go? Marcus won't answer my calls! My parents in Macon told me not to come home after what was posted online!"

"That is a matter for you and your personal attorney to resolve, Miss Mercer," Maya said. "Now, please unhook the chain. Deputy Davis needs to supervise your packing."

Slowly, with trembling fingers, Sloane unhooked the chain and pulled the heavy door open.

She looked entirely different from the smug, radiant woman who had held the microphone at the Candler Hotel. Her eyes were sunken, her cheeks flushed with shame, her expensive silk loungewear rumpled and stained with spilled tea.

As the deputy stepped inside to monitor the living room, Sloane looked at Maya, her voice cracking into a desperate plea.

"Please... tell Claire I’m sorry. I didn't know Grant had a vasectomy! I swear to God, I didn't know! When I found out I was pregnant with Marcus’s baby, I was terrified. Grant was so obsessed with having a legacy... he treated me like a queen when I told him it was his. I just wanted security for my child!"

Maya looked at the young woman with quiet, unyielding scrutiny.

"You didn't just want security, Miss Mercer. You wanted to humiliate a woman who had never spoken a single harsh word to you. You chose to pick up that microphone at the Candler Hotel. You chose to use the words 'barren wife.'"

May you like

Sloane dropped her head, unable to meet Maya’s gaze.

"You made your choice, Sloane," Maya concluded quietly. "Now you have twenty-eight minutes remaining."
