Chapter 5 - The Social Guillotine

Bad news travels fast in high society, but scandalous news travels at lightspeed.
By Friday morning, my phone was inundated with dozens of text messages, voicemails, and invitations from women who hadn't spoken to me in years. The board members' wives from the country club, the elite mothers from Maddie’s private academy, and the socialites who used to look down their noses at me while flirting brazenly with Nathan at charity galas—they were all circling like vultures.
Clara sat across from me on the back patio, scrolling through the local society blog on her tablet.
"Look at this headline," she laughed, taking a bite of her croissant. "*'Sterling Crest Expels Senior Litigator Nathan Mercer Amidst Embezzlement Scandal and Domestic Chaos.'* And look, they included a photograph of Amber being shoved into the police cruiser outside the courthouse!"
I glanced at the screen. The photograph was brutally clear: Amber, mascara running down her cheeks, wrists pinned behind her back, looking completely stripped of her designer arrogance. Beneath it was a detailed summary of Nathan’s disgrace, including the fact that the state bar association had launched an ethics investigation that could lead to his permanent disbarment.
"He's finished in this city," Clara remarked. "No top-tier firm will ever touch him. He’s radioactive."
"It’s not enough," I said quietly, stirring a spoon into my tea.
Clara paused, looking at me with arched eyebrows. "Claire, you took his job, you took his prestige, you locked him out of the house, and his mistress is sitting in a county jail waiting for her arraignment. What else is there?"
"The shell companies," I replied, leaning forward. "Evelyn’s forensic team found three offshore entities registered in the Cayman Islands under the name 'A&N Ventures.' Nathan didn't just siphon firm entertainment money. He was skimming from elderly client trust funds—estates that were supposed to be managed by Sterling Crest."
Clara’s eyes widened with genuine shock. "That’s federal prison time."
"Exactly," I said. "And guess whose signature is on the secondary disbursement accounts?"
"Amber's?"
"No," I answered, a chilling smile touching my lips. "His mother’s."
Eleanor Mercer. The matriarch who had treated me like a lower-class servant since the day I married her precious golden-boy son. Eleanor, who had once whispered in my ear at Thanksgiving dinner that Nathan could have married a senator's daughter instead of an ordinary art curator.
My phone vibrated on the glass table. It was Evelyn Vance.
"Claire," Evelyn’s crisp, aristocratic voice echoed through the speaker. "The state attorney’s office just accepted our evidentiary packet. But Nathan just did something extraordinarily foolish."
"What did he do?"
"He filed an emergency motion for sole custody of Maddie, alleging you are an unfit mother and emotionally unstable."
My knuckles turned white around the edge of my coffee cup. The air in my lungs turned to ice. He could steal money, he could cheat, he could burn down his own life—but the moment he tried to use my daughter as a bargaining chip, all mercy vanished.
"When is the hearing?" I asked, my voice deadly level.

"Monday morning at nine," Evelyn replied. "Bring your boxing gloves, Claire. Because over the weekend, we are going to burn his entire world to ash."
