Chapter 3 - The Reckoning of Amber Lin

The crisp autumn air tasted sweet as I crossed the courthouse plaza toward my sister and daughter. Maddie looked up from her chocolate ice cream cone, her dark eyes still shadowed by the trauma of what she had witnessed forty-eight hours ago outside Le Miroir, but when she saw my posture—shoulders back, chin lifted, a calm smile resting on my lips—her small face softened.
"Mom?" she asked hesitantly, setting her spoon down on a paper napkin. "Is it over?"
"Part of it, baby," I said, crouching before her and tucking a stray lock of hair behind her ear. "The part where your father gets away with lying to everyone. That part is finished."
My sister, Clara, handed me a warm cup of coffee with a knowing smirk. "His car was towed from the executive parking deck ten minutes ago," she whispered, leaning down. "Elena texted me. Security escorted him off the premises with a cardboard box. Harold Sterling didn’t even look him in the eye."
Before I could reply, the sharp clatter of designer heels echoed across the paved plaza.
Turning, I saw Amber Lin marching toward us. Her immaculate blowout was slightly disheveled in the autumn breeze, her oversized sunglasses pushed up into her platinum-blonde hair. She was clutching a designer handbag against her trench coat, her face twisted in frantic fury.
"You think you’re so clever, don’t you, Claire?" Amber spat, stopping six feet away, completely ignoring the fact that Clara immediately stepped in front of Maddie. "You think you can just destroy Nathan’s career and walk away without paying for it?"
I rose slowly to my full height. I didn't flinch. Two days ago, this woman had slapped me in public while Nathan stood by, watching with cold indifference. She had believed she was untouchable because she had my husband’s money and protection.
"You're making a scene in front of a municipal courthouse, Amber," I said calmly, taking a sip of my coffee. "Not the smartest move for someone currently facing aggravated assault charges."
Amber scoffed, though her lower lip betrayed a nervous tremble. "Nathan’s lawyers will crush your bogus little complaint before it ever reaches a judge! He’s a senior partner—"
"He *was* a senior partner," Clara interrupted, laughing aloud. "Check the firm's press wire, sweetie. He was terminated twenty-five minutes ago for gross financial misconduct. His equity was seized, and his credentials have been revoked."
Amber froze. The color drained from her cheeks until she looked as pale as marble. "What? No... Nathan said it was just a procedural review. He promised—"
"Nathan lied to you, Amber. Just like he lied to me for the last four years," I replied evenly. "And speaking of those assault charges..."
I glanced over Amber's shoulder. Two uniformed police officers who had been stationed at the courthouse entrance were walking briskly toward us, tipped off by Evelyn Vance’s paralegal just moments before.
Amber turned, saw the officers, and took an instinctive step back. "What is this?"
"Justice," I said quietly. "You slapped me in front of my daughter. You humiliated us because you thought Nathan owned this town. Now he owns nothing, and you are entirely on your own."
"Amber Lin?" Officer Rodriguez announced, his voice booming over the quiet hum of the park. "We have an active warrant for your arrest regarding an assault incident on West 54th Street."
The crowd gathered around the coffee carts turned to watch. Amber backed away, her hands trembling as she tried to raise her phone, but within seconds, the handcuffs clicked around her delicate wrists. She let out a humiliated shriek as bystanders lifted their smartphones, recording every single second of her downfall.
I watched her being led toward the patrol car, then turned back to Maddie.

"Come on, sweetheart," I said gently, taking her warm hand in mine. "Let’s go home and change the locks."
