Chapter 11 - A Desperate Gambit

Six months passed, and the Aura Tower was rising at an astonishing speed, its revolutionary biomimetic glass structure earning architectural awards across Europe and Asia. Claire Vance was named *Time* magazine’s Businesswoman of the Year. Her life had completely detached from the nightmare of her marriage.

Until an unmarked envelope arrived at her private penthouse on Park Avenue.

The envelope bore no stamp, only a wax seal featuring an eagle gripping an iron compass—the personal sigil of the Blackwood Syndicate, an international consortium of rogue financiers operating out of Zurich.

Inside was a single handwritten note and a grainy photograph.

The photograph showed Ethan Mercer, not in a prison cell, but sitting inside a dimly lit limousine in an unknown European city, his face scarred and hardened, wearing a bespoke suit. Beside him sat Victor Blackwood, the fiercest rival of the Vance family who had disappeared twenty years ago following a bloody corporate war with Julian Vance.

The note read:

*“Did you really think Ethan Mercer was an accident, little Claire? Did you think a simple, arrogant boy from Queens managed to charm his way into your heart and marry the hidden Vance heiress by pure luck? Look into your father’s death twenty years ago. Look at who introduced Ethan to your architecture school. The game did not end when Mercer Capital fell. It only began.”*

Claire felt a cold shiver run down her spine. Her father, Thomas Vance, had died in an unexplained helicopter crash twenty years ago—the very tragedy that had led her mother into grief and caused Claire to hide her identity to protect herself.

Had Ethan’s entire marriage to her been an orchestrated infiltration planned decades in advance?
