Chapter 10 - Rising from the Ashes

Under a brilliant autumn sun, the Hudson River sparkled like crushed diamonds.
A massive crowd had gathered at the former Hudson Horizon construction site. The giant banners bearing Ethan Mercer’s name had been torn down. In their place hung towering emerald-and-gold tapestries that read: **THE AURA TOWER — DESIGNED BY CLAIRE VANCE.**
Flashbulbs illuminated the grand stage where Claire stood at the podium. She wore an immaculate ivory suit, exuding an aura of serene confidence and absolute authority. Behind her sat the Governor, the Mayor, and Julian Vance, their faces glowing with pride.
“Architecture is not merely about steel, concrete, and soaring heights,” Claire spoke into the microphones, her voice echoing across the plaza and broadcast live to millions around the world. “It is about integrity. It is about honoring the hands that build the foundation, not just the names carved into the stone. Today, we begin not just a building, but a new chapter of transparency, creativity, and truth.”
Thunderous applause shook the plaza.
Thousands of miles away, in a maximum-security medical psychiatric ward upstate, Ethan Mercer sat in a bare room with padded walls, watching the broadcast on a small, caged television set.
His hair was unkempt, his eyes hollowed by madness and despair. He reached out with trembling, bruised fingers, touching the screen where Claire smiled warmly beside Alexander Thorne.
“That was my building…” Ethan whispered to the empty room, a tear rolling down his hollow cheek. “She was my wife…”
A guard tapped on the heavy iron window. “Lights out, Mercer. Step away from the screen.”
Ethan didn't move. He simply sank down onto the cold floor, clutching his knees to his chest, haunted by the memory of the cold rain and the twenty-three dollars that had bought his eternal damnation.
Claire stepped off the podium to a standing ovation. As she shook hands with world leaders, Alexander Thorne walked up beside her, handing her a flute of sparkling cider.
“A brilliant speech, Claire,” Alexander smiled, his eyes warm with genuine admiration. “The world is finally seeing you for who you truly are.”

“No, Alexander,” Claire smiled softly, looking up at the clear blue sky above Manhattan. “They are seeing who I was always meant to be.”
