Chapter 9 - The Evaporated Mirage

Six months passed.
The corporate world is unforgiving, but it is also resilient. Under the steady guidance of Marcus and myself, Vance Industrial Distribution did not falter; it stabilized.
I spent eighteen hours a day in the executive offices, learning the intricate details of logistics algorithms, renegotiating contracts with union leaders who had long distrusted Luca’s cutthroat methods, and ensuring that every single employee knew their pension funds were safe.
The board of directors, initially skeptical of a woman who had spent sixteen years outside the corporate arena, quickly learned that my forensic background made me far more formidable than Luca had ever been. I didn't rely on bravado or empty charisma; I relied on data, ethics, and mutual respect.
One rainy Tuesday afternoon, I received a visitor at corporate headquarters.
Brenda buzzed my intercom. "Mrs. Vance? There is a woman in the lobby requesting five minutes of your time. She won't leave."
"Who is it, Brenda?"
"Chloe Bennett."
I paused, looking at the spreadsheet on my dual monitors. "Send her up."
Two minutes later, the double doors of the CEO’s office opened, and Chloe walked in.
The glamorous, haughty mistress who had posed for photos in designer dresses was nowhere to be seen. She wore an ill-fitting beige trench coat, no makeup, and her hair was pulled back into a hasty, unwashed ponytail. Her face was hollow, dark circles bruising the skin beneath her eyes.
She stood in the center of my vast office, clutching a cheap faux-leather purse like a shield.
"Elena," she began, her voice cracked and uncertain.
"Mrs. Vance," I corrected her coldly, not looking up from my laptop. "State your business, Miss Bennett."
Chloe swallowed hard, taking a hesitant step toward my desk. "The State Attorney has frozen my personal accounts. They say the two million Luca moved through my brother's company is subject to federal civil forfeiture. I can't pay my rent. I can't hire a defense lawyer. They’re threatening to charge me as a co-conspirator."
"You *were* a co-conspirator," I said, finally shutting my laptop and looking her straight in the eye. "You helped him forge freight manifests. You accepted jewelry, rent, and luxury cars purchased with money stolen from our employees' pension reserves."
"He lied to me!" Chloe cried, tears of self-pity streaming down her cheeks. "He told me he was the sole heir! He told me Arthur was incompetent and that you were an abusive, cold woman who was blackmailing him! I was just... I was stupid, Elena! I believed him!"
"You didn't believe him, Chloe," I said, my voice deadpan and devoid of pity. "You believed his wallet. You wanted a shortcut to a penthouse lifestyle without having to work a single day of your life for it. You were willing to step over a dying old man and destroy two innocent children to get it."
"Please," she sobbed, dropping to her knees beside my desk, her manicured facade entirely shattered. "If you drop the civil claims, the prosecutors will offer me immunity. I will testify against Luca! I will give them every text, every email, every secret recording I have of him admitting to the embezzlement! Just don't let them send me to prison!"
I stood up, walked around the mahogany desk, and looked down at her.
"My legal team doesn't need your testimony, Chloe," I said softly. "The evidence we compiled is already airtight. Luca signed a plea agreement this morning. He will be serving six years at Marion Correctional Facility."
Chloe gasped, staring up at me with sheer terror. "Then what about me?"
"You will face the justice system just like any other criminal," I said. "You wanted Luca's world? Congratulations. You get to share his consequences."
I tapped the intercom on my desk. "Brenda, please have building security escort Miss Bennett out of the building. And make sure she is barred from the property permanently."
May you like
Chloe screamed, cursed, and begged as two security guards pulled her up from the carpet and dragged her toward the elevators. Her voice echoed down the marble hallway until the elevator doors chimed shut, sealing her out of our lives forever.
