Chapter 4 - The Shattered Glass

The security guards did not use physical force, but they didn't need to. The humiliation was absolute.
Two uniformed guards flanked Luca as he walked through the executive lobby, down the express elevator, and out into the main entrance of Vance Industrial. Every receptionist, every mail clerk, and every analyst watched in stunned silence as the golden boy of the Vance dynasty was escorted off the premises with a cardboard box containing a handful of personal desk ornaments.
Across the street, parked in a sleek white Mercedes coupe that Luca had leased with company funds, sat Chloe Bennett.
She had been waiting for him to emerge triumphant, expecting him to call her with the news that Arthur had surrendered and that their reign had begun. When she saw the two security guards push Luca through the revolving doors and toss his cardboard box onto the pavement, her mouth dropped open.
Luca stumbled across the four lanes of traffic, his tie undone, his hair disheveled, kicking an empty soda can out of his way as he reached the passenger door of the Mercedes. He yanked it open and threw his box into the footwell, collapsing into the leather seat.
"Drive," he snarled.
"Luca, what happened?" Chloe demanded, her voice shrill, her polished manicured nails digging into the steering wheel. "Why were security guards with you? Where is the press release? Did you get the interim appointment?"
"Just drive the damn car, Chloe!" he roared, slamming his fist against the dashboard.
Chloe flinched, then threw the car into gear, peeling away from the curb. As they merged into traffic, she shot him an alarmed look. "What did your father say? Did that bitch Elena try something?"
"They know," Luca breathed, burying his face in his hands. His shoulders shook with suppressed panic. "They know about everything. The Cayman accounts, the freight shell companies, the audio messages... Dad was there, Chloe. He was sitting right at the head of the table."
Chloe slammed on the brakes at a red light, her eyes bulging. "What do you mean, *he knows*? What about our accounts? What about the two million?"
"Marcus is filing criminal referrals," Luca whispered, his voice trembling violently. "They froze the corporate operating accounts an hour ago. My executive card was declined when I tried to pay for parking. Dad signed over the entire voting block to Elena. She controls the trust. She controls the company."
"To *Elena*?" Chloe’s voice hit a pitch of hysterical fury. "That drab, boring housewife? You told me she was an idiot! You told me she wouldn't notice a dime missing! You told me your father was practically brain-dead!"
"Shut up!" Luca screamed, turning on her, his face purple with rage. "You think this is my fault? Who told me to push the timeline? Who kept texting my personal phone while I was in the shower? *You did!* If you hadn't been so greedy, Elena never would have checked my messages!"
Chloe stared at him, the illusion of the wealthy, dashing executive evaporating before her eyes. She saw him now for what he truly was: a spoiled, incompetent boy who had ridden his father’s coattails his entire life, completely powerless the moment his father cut the strings.
"Don't you dare raise your voice at me, Luca," Chloe hissed, her voice turning venomous. "I didn't sign those transfer documents. You did. My name is on an LLC that you created. If the State Attorney comes knocking, I’m telling them you coerced me. I’m telling them I was just an employee following executive orders."
Luca looked at her in horror. "What did you say?"
"You heard me," Chloe said coldly, pulling the Mercedes over to the curb three blocks from her apartment. "Get out."
"Excuse me?"
"You heard me, Luca. Get out of my car."
"I bought this car!" Luca yelled, gesturing wildly at the interior. "The lease is under my logistics account!"
"Then I guess the repo men will come find it, won't they?" Chloe sneered, reaching across him and popping the passenger door open. "You don't have a job. You don't have an inheritance. Your father is going to put you in prison, and your wife has all the money. I’m not going down with your sinking ship."
"Chloe, please—" Luca’s arrogance completely vanished, replaced by desperate, pitiful pleading. "We have the penthouse. We can figure this out. I have contacts in Chicago, I can get a consulting gig—"
"The penthouse lease was terminated thirty minutes ago," Chloe said, pulling up an email on her phone and shoving the screen into his face. "Building management just sent a notice. The Vance corporate guarantor was withdrawn this morning. We have forty-eight hours to vacate."
She leaned over and shoved his cardboard box out onto the dirty sidewalk, where it spilled his pens and framed awards onto the concrete.
"Get out, Luca," she said, her voice dripping with contempt. "Before I call the police and tell them you’re harassing me."
Luca sat frozen for three seconds, his jaw slack, before Chloe shoved him hard against the shoulder. Numbly, he stepped out of the vehicle onto the cold pavement.

The passenger door slammed shut. The Mercedes sped away into the mid-morning traffic, leaving Luca Vance standing on the corner of 5th and Elm, surrounded by the scattered remnants of his stolen life, with fifteen dollars in his wallet and nowhere left to go.
