Chapter 32 - The Descent to the Pier

The stone staircase leading from the bluffs down to the private marina was steep, slippery with sea mist, and carved directly into the face of the cliff. With every descending step, the roar of the surf grew louder, masking the faint sound of my own shallow breathing.
Above me, the silhouette of the mansion stood majestic against the starry sky, dark and vulnerable. Below, the black hull of the mega-yacht rocked rhythmically against the pylons of the private pier.
"Keep walking, Eleanor! Don't drag your heels!" Julian's voice blared through the bullhorn. He was pacing the upper deck like a manic predator, adjusting the cuffs of his pristine white tuxedo. It was sickeningly surreal—he wore the exact style of jacket he had worn on the day he paraded Chloe through the international terminal to humiliate me. Even in his criminal desperation, Julian Apex could not shed his hollow vanity.
As I reached the bottom landing, my boots hit the wet cedar planks of the pier. The blinding searchlight pivoted, pinning me in an incandescent cage of white light.
"Halt right there," Arthur Vance commanded, his voice deep and resonant without needing the amplifier now that I was only thirty yards away.
Arthur stepped to the edge of the yacht’s gangway. He was dressed in a tailored charcoal overcoat, his silver hair immaculate despite the ocean gale. The detonator in his right hand flashed in synchronization with the crimson digital clock mounted on the yacht’s bridge: four minutes and ten seconds remaining.
"You took your time, Mrs. Apex," Arthur said, a chilling smile curving his thin lips. "Or should I say, Eleanor? You’ve proven to be far more troublesome than the naive socialite Julian described when he first brought you into my circle."
"Julian has never had accurate judgment when evaluating women, Arthur," I called out, my voice clear and unbroken over the surge of the water. "If he did, he wouldn't have brought his mistress to an airport lounge thinking it was a coronation, only to end up broke, indicted, and begging a retired pirate for a ride."
Julian’s face flushed purple with rage. He lunged toward the yacht's railing, gripping the steel bar so hard his knuckles turned white. "Shut up! You took everything from me! You took my company, you turned the board against me, you froze my accounts! Look at me, Eleanor! Look at who is holding the cards now!"
"I'm looking at you, Julian," I said, cold disdain dripping from every syllable. "And I see an unemployed convict wearing a rented tuxedo on another man’s boat."
Behind Julian, Chloe raised her head, weeping bitterly through swollen lips. "Eleanor... please," she sobbed, shivering uncontrollably. "He tricked me... Arthur promised they'd get us to a private island in the Caribbean... they used me to forge the transfer papers, and then they chained me like a dog... please help me!"

"Silence the whore," Arthur commanded quietly. Julian instantly turned and struck Chloe across the face with the back of his hand, knocking her against the bulkhead.
Arthur looked back at me, his eyes dead as flint. "The ledger, Eleanor. Walk up the gangway and place it in my hands. Three minutes. If the clock reaches zero, you will watch your children's bedroom slide into the Atlantic before I put a bullet in your forehead."
