Chapter 27 - The Valmont Summit

By noon, the business world was in convulsions.

News of Marcus Sterling’s federal arrest sent shockwaves through the financial district, but I didn't give the media time to speculate. While Ben coordinated with the Securities and Exchange Commission to freeze all domestic accounts linked to Crestview Holdings, I drove straight to the hospital.

Gordon was out of surgery and had been moved to the private executive wing under heavy federal guard.

When I walked into the room, he was awake.

His face was pale, an IV drip was feeding medication into his arm, and bandages were thick beneath his hospital gown, but those sharp, piercing gray eyes were open, focused on me the moment I crossed the threshold.

"You look terrible," he murmured, his voice hoarse from the breathing tube they had removed hours earlier. A faint, tired smile touched his lips.

"Look who's talking," I replied softly, sitting on the edge of the bed and taking his calloused, uninjured hand into both of mine. "You took two bullets for me, Caldwell. You’re terrible at tactical retreat."

"I told you... you're family," he whispered, squeezing my fingers with surprising strength. "Did they get Arthur?"

"Arthur escaped by boat," I said honestly, watching his jaw tighten. "Marcus was the insider. He’s in federal custody now. But Arthur is retreating to the Valmont Group’s headquarters in Zurich. He intends to cut off our European shipping corridors before we can stabilize the market."

Gordon closed his eyes, inhaling a slow, painful breath. "Then you have to hit him where his power originated. The North American board of the Valmont Group is meeting today at three o'clock at the Sovereign Tower. They don't know Arthur was compromised at the pier. They think he is still their untouchable phantom."

"What do I have on them?" I asked.

Gordon pointed weakly toward his leather briefcase resting in the corner of the room. "The bottom compartment. A biometric drive. It contains thirty years of Arthur’s unredacted transactions—every bribe, every forged manifest, every wire transfer that led to my father’s downfall. My father kept duplicate records before he died. I spent my life compiling them. Take it to the board, Eleanor. Take the seat that belongs to you."

I walked over to the briefcase, retrieved the sleek black drive, and looked back at Gordon.

"Rest," I told him, leaning down and pressing a gentle kiss to his forehead. "I’ll handle the board."

"Eleanor," Gordon called out just as I reached the door.

I turned.

"Show no mercy," he said, his eyes blazing with fierce pride.

"I learned from the best," I replied.

At precisely 2:55 PM, I walked through the towering glass doors of the Sovereign Tower. I had traded my blood-stained clothes for a tailored emerald-green power suit, my hair pinned back in an immaculate chignon, my father’s gold watch hanging openly from my lapel.

The board of the Valmont North American division—twelve ultra-wealthy European and American oligarchs—sat around an oval obsidian table on the fiftieth floor. When the double doors swung open and I walked in unannounced, conversation died instantly.

"Mrs. Vance?" the chairman, an elderly French financier named Henri Laurent, gasped in shock. "This is an executive session. You have no legal standing to enter this room."

"I have every standing, Monsieur Laurent," I said, walking to the head of the table and placing the biometric drive directly into the master terminal.

A massive holographic display flickered to life across the boardroom wall, illuminating every offshore bank account, every shell entity, and the federal warrants issued two hours ago for Arthur Vance and Marcus Sterling.

The room gasped in collective horror.

"As of twelve o'clock today, the United States Department of the Treasury has frozen all domestic liquidity tied to Arthur Vance," I announced, my voice carrying the absolute authority of an empress. "If you continue to back my father’s ghost, your entire North American assets will be seized under anti-terrorism and racketeering statutes before the markets close today."

"What do you want, Eleanor?" Laurent stammered, wiping sweat from his forehead.

"Total capitulation," I replied without hesitation. "You will strip Arthur Vance of all voting authority within the Valmont Group. You will appoint me as the managing director of your North American maritime operations. And you will revoke all maritime clearance for Arthur’s vessel."

Silence fell over the room like an avalanche.

One by one, the board members looked at the damning evidence on the screen, then at the steel in my eyes.

Henri Laurent slowly lowered his head. "The motion... is accepted."
