Chapter 9 - The Return to Hart House

One week after the wedding that never was, the gates of Hart House opened once more.

The spring rain had washed the estate clean, leaving the sprawling stone terraces and vibrant emerald lawns glistening beneath a brilliant morning sun. The iron columns Celeste had spent years restoring stood proud and tall, no longer draped in Evelyn Crane’s pretentious white silk, but gleaming in their raw, historic majesty.

In the grand library, Celeste stood before her father’s portrait.

The room was quiet. On the mahogany desk behind her sat a signed legal decree from the State Supreme Court. The Hart House Preservation Trust was officially autonomous, backed by an irrevocable endowment fund guaranteed directly by Sterling Enterprises.

Bennett Crane was currently sitting in a federal detention cell in lower Manhattan, denied bail due to flight risk. Evelyn Crane had fled the city for a small rental property in upstate New York, her socialite crown shattered into irrecoverable dust.

The door to the library opened softly.

Celeste didn't need to turn to know who it was. The heavy, measured tread, the subtle scent of cedarwood and cold ocean air—it was Julian.

He walked up beside her, wearing an open-collared navy shirt and tailored trousers, his hands in his pockets. He looked up at the portrait of her father, Arthur Hart.

“He would be proud of you,” Julian said quietly.

“He would have told me I was reckless,” Celeste said, a soft, genuine smile touching her lips. “He always said that playing chess with wolves would get you bitten.”

“You didn't play chess with wolves,” Julian said, turning to look at her, his silver eyes softening with warmth. “You became the wolf. You hunted them down and took back what belonged to your bloodline.”

Celeste turned to face him, leaning back against the heavy mahogany desk. She looked at Julian Sterling—the corporate raider, the ruthless billionaire, the man high society whispered about in terrified awe. But looking at him now, standing in her father’s library with the sunlight illuminating the dark strands of his hair, she saw something entirely different.

She saw the boy who had lost his father to Crane greed.

And she saw the man who had torn down an entire dynasty just to bring her home.

“The press is calling us the new power couple of New York,” Celeste said, raising an eyebrow with playful amusement. “The columnists are taking bets on whether our altar alliance was a business merger or a calculated romance.”

Julian took a step forward, closing the distance between them. He reached out, his hands resting gently on the edge of the desk on either side of her hips, effectively caging her within his warmth.

“Let them bet,” Julian murmured, leaning down so his lips were mere inches from her ear. “What do you think it was, Celeste?”

Celeste tilted her head up, meeting his piercing silver gaze. “I think it started as survival. Then it became revenge.”

“And now?” Julian asked, his voice dropping into that deep, intoxicating baritone that sent shivers racing across her skin. His hand came up to softly touch her neck, his thumb resting gently against the hollow of her throat, right where *The Heart of Valois* had rested days before. “Now that the Cranes are in ruins, now that Hart House is yours forever... what is this between us, Celeste?”

Celeste looked into his eyes, seeing the quiet vulnerability hidden beneath his armor of absolute power. For all his billions, for all his ruthless corporate takeovers, Julian Sterling had laid his heart at her feet. He wasn't demanding an empire. He was asking for her.

Celeste reached up, her fingers tangling into the soft, thick hair at the nape of his neck.

“I think,” Celeste whispered, her lips brushing against his jawline, “it’s just the beginning.”

Julian let out a low, breathless laugh, pulling her flush against his chest, his mouth capturing hers in a kiss that was slow, deep, and filled with the promise of everything yet to come.
