Chapter 8 - The Fall of Daphne Shaw

By nightfall, the French Riviera was buzzing with the scandal of the century.
Bennett Crane was being held in a private detention facility in Nice, awaiting formal extradition proceedings initiated by the United States Department of Justice. But Daphne Shaw’s downfall was playing out on a far more vicious, public stage: the internet.
Inside the VIP lounge of the Monaco Yacht Club, Priya Nair had her feet propped up on a velvet ottoman, scrolling through her tablet with vicious satisfaction.
“It’s poetry, Celeste,” Priya said, taking a sip of vintage Bellini. “Pure, unadulterated poetry.”
Celeste sat by the panoramic window, watching the luxury mega-yachts bob gently on the harbor waters. She had changed into an elegant, emerald-green silk slip dress, the sapphire necklace glowing brilliantly against her bare skin. Julian was standing at the bar, quietly conversing with his chief legal counsel, but his eyes never strayed far from Celeste. Every few moments, his gaze would drift back to her, protective, possessive, and warm.
“What happened to Daphne?” Celeste asked, turning her head toward Priya.
“Well, the moment the French police confiscated her phone, they found three years of encrypted chats,” Priya said, smirking. “Daphne wasn't just Bennett’s mistress. She was running a systematic kickback scheme through the Crane-Hart Charitable Foundation. She had been siphoning hundreds of thousands of dollars into private shell accounts for months before she ever convinced Bennett to elope.”
Priya tapped the screen, showing Celeste the trending headlines.
*‘THE SOCIAL CLIMBER’S PRISON: DAPHNE SHAW INDICTED FOR EMBEZZLEMENT AND CONSPIRACY.’*
*‘CRANE CAPITAL SCANDAL: HOW A FOUNDATION DIRECTOR BROUGHT DOWN A BILLION-DOLLAR DYNASTY.’*
“Bennett turned on her the second the federal prosecutor walked into the interrogation room,” Priya continued. “He signed an affidavit swearing Daphne coerced him, threatened to expose his private tax evasions if he didn't take her to Europe with the sapphire.”
Celeste shook her head, a cold smile touching her lips. “Of course he did. Bennett never took responsibility for a single mistake in his life. The moment the ship sank, he threw his mistress overboard to try and save his own skin.”
“Except Daphne recorded him too,” Priya chuckled darkly. “She released audio notes of Bennett laughing about how they were going to leave you broke and disgraced at Hart House. The internet has completely devoured her. Her brand sponsorships are canceled. Her agency dropped her. Her family issued a public statement disowning her actions. She will spend the next five to seven years in federal prison with zero friends and zero dollars.”
Julian walked over, carrying two glasses of chilled champagne. He handed one to Celeste and took the seat beside her, his long legs brushing against hers.
“The extradition papers have been signed by the French magistrate,” Julian said, his baritone voice calm and smooth. “Bennett will be escorted onto a federal transport flight back to New York tomorrow morning. The Crane family’s assets have officially been placed under court-appointed receivership.”
Celeste looked down at her champagne glass, watching the tiny bubbles rise to the surface. “And Evelyn?”
“Evelyn has barricaded herself inside the Park Avenue penthouse,” Julian replied, a dark, satisfying amusement dancing in his eyes. “The doormen have orders to turn away all her society friends. The board formally removed her as chairwoman two hours ago. Crane Capital is being liquidated, asset by asset, to pay off their institutional creditors.”
Julian paused, reaching out to cover her hand with his. His touch was warm, solid, completely grounding.
“Hart House is completely safe, Celeste,” Julian murmured, his silver eyes searching hers. “The debt covenants have been dissolved. The foundation funds have been recovered. You won. You took back everything they tried to steal from you.”
Celeste looked into his eyes, feeling an overwhelming swell of emotion that she had kept locked behind her ribs for days.
“I didn't do it alone, Julian,” she said softly. “You gave me the power to fight back. Why? You could have destroyed the Cranes without standing at that altar with me. You could have bought their debt and crushed them in a quiet boardroom without dragging yourself into a society scandal.”
Julian didn't answer immediately. He set his champagne glass down on the table, leaned closer to her, and brought his hand up to cup her cheek. His thumb softly traced the contour of her cheekbone, his touch sending a delicious, thrilling shiver straight through her core.
“Because, Celeste,” Julian said, his voice dropping into a deep, raw whisper that made the rest of the world fade into nothingness, “I didn't care about a quiet boardroom victory. I wanted the world to see you for what you truly are: untouchable. And I wanted to be the man standing beside you when you realized you never needed Bennett Crane to be powerful.”
Julian leaned in closer, his lips hovering a breath away from hers. “And because... since the moment I saw you in Rome three years ago, I haven't been able to think about another woman.”
Celeste’s heart hammered furiously against her ribs. The tension that had been simmering between them since he kicked open the doors of her bridal suite finally boiled over. Without hesitation, Celeste closed the small distance between them, pressing her lips against his.
The kiss was electric. Julian groaned softly into her mouth, his arm wrapping around her waist, pulling her flush against his broad, muscular chest. He kissed her with an intoxicating mixture of hunger, reverence, and fierce possessiveness, tasting like vintage champagne and victory.
For the first time in months, Celeste felt completely alive. She wasn't an architect trying to salvage a dying legacy; she was a woman claiming her own desire, wrapped in the arms of the only man who had ever truly seen her.
When they finally broke apart, both of them breathing heavily, Julian’s forehead rested against hers, his silver eyes burning with a dark, breathtaking promise.

“Let’s go home, Celeste,” Julian whispered against her lips. “Let’s go back to Hart House.”
