Chapter 7 - THE FINAL RECKONING

The elevator chimed, and a moment later, a heavy knock echoed against my front door.

I walked over, unlatched the deadbolt, and pulled the door open.

Alexander stood in the doorway. He looked smaller than he had in the boardroom, his shoulders slumped, his eyes bloodshot and desperate. When he saw me—dressed in a simple cashmere sweater and jeans, looking calm, radiant, and utterly untouchable—he stumbled forward as if he wanted to fall to his knees once again.

"Evelyn," he breathed, his voice cracking with raw emotion. "Ev... thank god. I knew you’d let me up. I knew underneath all that anger, you still cared."

I didn't move out of the doorway. I kept my arms crossed over my chest, blocking his entry into my home.

"You have five minutes, Alexander," I said, my tone completely devoid of warmth. "And every second you spend whining wastes one of them."

He swallowed hard, his hands trembling as he reached out toward me. "Ev, I was an idiot. I was blind. Vanessa... Vanessa meant nothing to me, she manipulated me, she made me think—"

"Stop," I cut him off sharply, my voice like the crack of a whip. "Do not blame Vanessa for your own cowardice. You made that speech at the altar because you wanted an audience. You wanted to prove to everyone that you were the master of your own destiny, and you thought publicly discarding me would make you look powerful."

Alexander flinched, stepping back as if I had struck him across the face. "I made a mistake! People make mistakes, Evelyn! Can't you forgive me? We had three years! We loved each other!"

"We didn't love each other, Alexander," I said softly. "You loved the idea of someone who made your life easier, who funded your dreams, and who never demanded that you be a better man. And I loved a ghost—a version of you that only ever existed in my imagination."

He stared at me, tears finally spilling over his eyelashes and tracking down his hollow cheeks. "Is there... is there nothing I can do? Can I work for you? At Sterling Global? As an analyst, an assistant, anything! I’ll do whatever you want!"

I looked at him for a long time, the anger inside me completely replaced by a profound, liberating sense of closure.

"No, Alexander," I said quietly. "You won't work for Sterling Global. You won't work in this city. You’re going to take whatever is left of your dignity, pack whatever clothes fit in your car, and start over somewhere else. Because in my world—the world you always claimed I didn't fit into—there is no room for men who build their success on the backs of people they betrayed."

I reached out and slowly pulled the heavy oak door toward me.

"Goodbye, Alexander."

"Evelyn, wait! Please—!"

I threw the deadbolt.

I stood there in the quiet hallway of my apartment for a moment, listening to his muffled sobbing fade as the service elevator doors opened and closed. Then I turned around, walked back to my kitchen, and poured myself a cup of tea.

The chapter was closed. The book was finished. And my real life was just beginning.
