Chapter 5 - The Aftermath

The afternoon sun was breaking through the heavy gray clouds by the time I pulled my truck back into the driveway of my father's house. The air felt lighter, cleaner, free of the oppressive tension that had choked the rooms since the day of the funeral.

I walked up the front steps, pushed open the front door, and stepped into the living room. The Styrofoam cup was gone—Tristan’s paralegal must have tossed it during our prep meeting—and the lingering smell of rotting funeral lilies had finally faded, replaced by the natural scent of old pinewood and polish.

I walked down the hallway and entered my father’s study. The afternoon light streamed through the clean windowpanes, illuminating the dust motes dancing in the air above his heavy oak desk. I walked over, pulled out the leather-bound ledger from the bottom drawer, and gently placed it back where it belonged.

My phone buzzed on the desk. I picked it up. A text from Declan: DOJ just picked up the warrants for Apex Holdings. Hector's bank accounts are officially frozen. They're done, Carver.

I typed a short reply: Understood. Thanks for everything, Declan. Drinks are on me next time you're in town.

I tossed the phone onto the desk, walked over to the armchair, and sat down. The leather creaked softly beneath me—the exact same comforting, familiar sound my father had listened to for thirty years while reading his morning paper.

For the first time since I returned home from deployment, I felt a deep, profound sense of peace settle into my bones. The war was over. The house was safe. And my father's legacy—built with calloused hands, honest sweat, and unbreakable integrity—was finally protected.

I leaned back, closed my eyes, and let out a long, easy breath. I was home.
