Chapter 4 - Behind Closed Doors

Judge Thomas Sterling’s chambers smelled of old paper, leather, and strong black coffee. The room was quiet, dominated by a large mahogany table surrounded by high-backed leather chairs. Judge Sterling, a weathered man with silver hair and sharp, analytical eyes, sat at the head of the table, his fingers steepled as he silently turned the final pages of the forensic audit report Tristan had handed him.
For ten long minutes, nobody spoke. The only sound in the room was the soft rustle of heavy bond paper as the judge methodically reviewed every single wire transfer, every bank statement, and every text message transcript detailing the harassment campaign.
Bianca sat across the table, her hands clenched so tightly in her lap that her knuckles were bruised purple. Hector was sweating profusely, dabbing his forehead with a crumpled linen handkerchief, refusing to meet my eyes.
Finally, Judge Sterling closed the file folder with a crisp, definitive thud. He looked up, his gaze sweeping slowly over Bianca and Hector before finally resting on me.
"Mrs. Griffin. Mr. Sterling," the judge's voice was deep, steady, and utterly devoid of warmth. "In my thirty years on the bench, I have seen many messy family estates. But rarely have I encountered a petition so transparently fraudulent, backed by such an aggressive campaign of harassment and financial manipulation."
Bianca’s voice trembled as she leaned forward. "Your Honor, please—that audit report is filled with mischaracterizations! My father wanted to help me build my business—"
"Your father withdrew his entire retirement savings under severe emotional and financial pressure to sustain a shell company that is currently under federal investigation for wire fraud," Judge Sterling interrupted, his voice cutting through her plea like a scalpel. "The court has reviewed the original will executed by Arthur Griffin. The property transfer is legal, valid, and fully protected by the stipulated five-year buyout grace period. Furthermore, the emergency partition request is hereby dismissed with prejudice."
Hector let out a ragged, choked sound, sinking back into his chair as if he had been physically struck. "Dismissed? With prejudice? But we need—we need that liquidity—"
"You need a good criminal defense attorney, Mr. Sterling," the judge said coldly. "Because based on the forensic evidence submitted by Captain Griffin’s legal team, I am forwarding these files to the United States Attorney’s Office for immediate review regarding federal wire fraud and interstate financial conspiracy."
The silence in the room was absolute. Bianca stared at the judge in horror, her carefully constructed upper-class persona dissolving entirely into a mask of pure, unadulterated terror. The high-rise apartments, the designer dresses, the luxury cars—it was all gone. The illusion had shattered completely.
Judge Sterling stood up, signaling the end of the proceeding. "This court is adjourned. Captain Griffin, you are free to return to your home. Any further attempts by the respondents to harass, coerce, or interfere with the property will result in immediate criminal contempt charges."

"Thank you, Your Honor," I said, standing up, buttoning my suit jacket, and picking up my briefcase.
I didn't look at Bianca or Hector as I turned and walked out of the chambers. I didn't need to. The battlefield had cleared, and the victory was absolute.
