Chapter 6 - The Price of Blood

The grandfather clock in the master bedroom of the Hart estate struck two in the morning.

I sat in an oversized velvet armchair, watching the baby monitors glowing softly on the nightstand. Maya was sleeping peacefully, tiny lips pursed around a pacifier, while Leo stretched his small legs under the embroidered sheets. For the first time in five years, the air in my lungs didn't feel heavy with compromise, walking on eggshells, or enduring the condescending smirks of Flynn's elitist social circle.

A gentle knock sounded at the door.

Jonathan entered, holding a confidential dossier with the seal of the city's maritime port authority.

"Madam Claire," Jonathan spoke softly, mindful of the resting nursery. "Flynn was released on high-interest bail twenty minutes ago. The bond was underwritten by an offshore holding company linked to Sterling subsidiary shell firms."

I didn't turn around. "Did they think I wouldn't track the money?"

"They are desperate," Jonathan said. "Furthermore, our internal intelligence intercepted an encrypted wire transfer sent to Dr. Warren Ross—the external consulting neonatologist our medical director hired to assist Dr. Morris tonight."

My knuckles tightened against the armrest until the skin turned white.

They were going after my babies.

Flynn couldn't defeat me in the boardroom. He couldn't face me in the court of law. So his instinct was to strike at the two innocent lives fighting for breath in their cribs.

"What was the instruction given to Dr. Ross?" I asked, my voice terrifyingly calm.

"A subtle contamination of the neonatal nutritional drip," Jonathan replied, his jaw clenching with suppressed fury. "A dosage of mild potassium chloride. Not enough to kill instantly, but enough to trigger acute cardiac distress, mimicking congenital defects caused by oxygen deprivation during birth. It would allow Flynn to file an emergency injunction claiming your negligence and unstable mental state caused irreparable damage."

A cold, deadly stillness washed over the room.

Five years of patience, five years of loving a man who viewed me as nothing more than a stepping stone, dissolved into pure, concentrated steel. When I died on that operating table, the gentle, forgiving Claire died with me. The woman breathing now was the sole heir of the Hart dynasty, built on iron, steel, and ruthless survival.

"Jonathan," I said, standing up smoothly, smoothing the hem of my silk robe.

"Yes, Madam Claire?"

"Notify Dr. Morris immediately. Replace the intravenous solutions with sterile saline. Let Dr. Ross complete his shift under silent surveillance. I want every fingerprint, every vial, and every surveillance camera angle backed up onto three separate external servers."

"And then?"

"And then let Dr. Ross deliver his report to Chloe Sterling," I said, my lips curving into a deadly, razor-thin smile. "Let them think their poison worked. Let Flynn feel the thrill of a victory he hasn't earned."

"Understood," Jonathan bowed. "And what of the press conference Flynn just scheduled for ten o'clock tomorrow morning at the Grand Hyatt?"

"Oh, let him speak," I replied softly, kissing Leo's forehead as he stirred in his sleep. "A man digs his grave deepest when he believes he’s digging for gold."
