Chapter 6 - The Scavenger Hunt

By Monday morning, Daniel’s corporate empire had completely disintegrated into dust.

Vanguard Commercial Real Estate had placed Daniel on immediate, indefinite suspension, freezing all of his stock options, retirement accounts, and corporate bonuses. The federal prosecutors had frozen every bank account, credit card, and asset tied to his name, including the hidden funds in *Meridian Holding*.

Elena Rostova had been fired by noon on Friday, and word was already circulating through the commercial real estate community that she was under active federal investigation for conspiracy to commit wire fraud.

And as for me? I was sitting in Marcus Vance’s plush downtown office overlooking the Columbus skyline, signing my name across a mountain of legal documents that transferred total ownership of our primary assets directly into my name.

"Well, Claire," Marcus said, sliding a final leather-bound folder across the mahogany desk with a wide grin. "As part of the emergency asset-freezing injunction and the preliminary divorce settlement, the court has awarded you full title to the Columbus condo, our secondary properties, and all remaining corporate restitution funds recovered from Daniel’s offshore accounts."

I picked up the heavy Montblanc pen, my hand steady, and signed my name with firm, sweeping strokes.

*Claire Mercer.*

Or rather, as I realized with a sudden, liberating pang of clarity—just **Claire**.

"What about Daniel?" I asked, looking up at Marcus.

"He’s currently sitting in a holding cell at the Franklin County detention center, waiting for his arraignment on federal charges," Marcus replied, leaning back in his chair. "His defense attorney tried to file for bail this morning, but the judge denied it as a high flight risk given his hidden offshore assets. He’s looking at serious federal time, Claire. At least ten to twelve years."

I felt a strange, detached sense of peace. There was no joy in his downfall, only a profound sense of closure. The man who had tried to erase me had completely erased himself.

Later that afternoon, I drove back to the condo.

I didn't expect to find Daniel there, of course, but as I pulled into the parking garage, I noticed a sleek black sedan idling near the entrance.

The passenger door opened, and a woman stepped out.

It was Elena Rostova.

She looked entirely different from the polished, untouchable executive I had seen in the boardroom on Friday. Her Chanel blazer was wrinkled, her makeup was smudged under her eyes, and her hair was pulled back into a messy, frantic ponytail.

She intercepted me before I could reach the lobby elevator.

"Claire," she said, her voice shaking with a mixture of rage and desperation. "We need to talk."

I stopped, turning to face her with a cool, impassioned gaze. "I have nothing to say to you, Ms. Rostova."

"You ruined everything!" she hissed, stepping closer, her eyes flashing with venom. "Daniel told me you were just a clueless nurse who wouldn't notice a thing! He promised me we were going to move to Florida, that we were going to have a fresh start!"

I let out a quiet, bitter laugh. "And you believed him? A man who would lie, cheat, and steal from his wife of twenty-five years to buy you designer clothes? You deserve each other, Elena."

"He loves me!" she screamed, the desperation finally cracking her composure. "You're just bitter because he didn't want you anymore!"

"No, Elena," I said softly, looking her straight in the eye with absolute authority. "He didn't want *anyone*. He only wanted himself. And now, he gets to spend the next decade of his life alone in a concrete box. Enjoy your fresh start."

Without another word, I turned away, leaving her standing alone in the parking garage, staring after me in stunned defeat.
