Chapter 5 - The Collapse of the Empire

"Federal investigators?"

Arthur Pendelton stood up so fast his leather chair tipped backward and crashed onto the carpet. His face was pale with shock as he looked between Marcus Vance, the federal agents, and a trembling Daniel.

"What is the meaning of this, Mr. Vance?" Arthur demanded, his voice trembling with authority. "Vanguard Commercial Real Estate is a multi-million-dollar publicly traded firm. What do federal agents want with our regional development director?"

Daniel looked like a cornered animal. All the swagger, the corporate arrogance, and the polished charm had completely evaporated. Sweat beaded on his forehead, and his hands shook uncontrollably as he tried to back away from the table.

"It's a mistake," Daniel stammered, his voice pitching high and panicked. "Arthur, please, listen to me. This is just a bitter, unstable wife acting out during a routine domestic dispute. She’s... she’s unwell!"

"Unwell?" I stepped forward, looking Daniel dead in the eye. All the grief, all the pain, and all the betrayal I had felt over the last forty-eight hours crystallized into a cold, unbreakable fury. "Daniel, for twenty-five years, I worked double shifts at a rehabilitation center so you could pay off your debts while you romanced your corporate mistress and embezzled millions from this company."

Elena Rostova sprang to her feet, her face turning chalk-white. "That’s a lie! I have nothing to do with—"

"Quiet, Ms. Rostova," Marcus Vance interrupted smoothly, walking forward and dropping a thick binder onto the conference table right in front of her. "Unless you'd like to explain to these federal agents why four point two million dollars in corporate funds were funneled through ghost vendor accounts directly into *Meridian Holding LLC*—a shell corporation registered in your name at your residential address."

Elena stared at the binder as if it were a venomous snake. She opened her mouth to speak, but no words came out. She dropped back down into her chair, covering her face with her manicured hands.

The federal agent in charge stepped forward, pulling a pair of cold, steel handcuffs from his belt.

"Daniel Mercer," the agent said clearly, his voice echoing off the glass walls of the boardroom. "You are under arrest for corporate fraud, grand larceny, embezzlement, and cross-border money laundering."

"No... no, wait!" Daniel shouted, lunging forward as the agents grabbed his arms and forced his hands behind his back. "You can't do this! My lawyers—this is a civil matter! Claire, please! Tell them! We can talk about this at home!"

"There is no home, Daniel," I said quietly, watching as the steel cuffs clicked shut around the wrists of the man I had loved for half my life. "You made your choice. Now you get to live with the consequences."

As the agents hauled a sobbing, broken Daniel out of the boardroom, the heavy silence of absolute devastation descended upon the room.

Arthur Pendelton sank slowly back into his chair, looking up at me with a mixture of shock and profound respect.

"Claire..." Arthur whispered, shaking his head. "My God. I had no idea."

May you like

"Nobody did, Arthur," I replied, snapping my briefcase shut with a crisp, satisfying sound. "But don't worry. Vanguard is going to get every single penny back. And as for me? My legal team and I are going to make sure that the only thing Daniel owns when this is over is the prison uniform on his back."
