Chapter 9 - The Foundation of Tomorrow

Six months later, the grand ballroom of the Palmer House Hilton was once again filled with the elite of Chicago—not for a charity gala, and not for a high-society engagement party, but for the official launch of the *Reed-Valenti Pediatric Heart Foundation*.

Flashbulbs popped across the red carpet, but this time, the cameras weren't hunting for scandal or tracking a tragic downfall. They were capturing a new beginning.

Standing at the podium on the elevated stage was Ethan Reed, now nine years old, standing straight and tall, wearing a miniature tuxedo that made him look like a tiny corporate executive. He held a small sheet of paper in his hands, nervously scanning the crowd of five hundred politicians, doctors, philanthropists, and business leaders.

In the front row, sitting side-by-side at a VIP table, were Hannah and Nicholas.

Hannah wore a breathtaking floor-length gown of deep emerald silk, her hair styled in soft waves, looking every bit the brilliant, powerful director she had become. Nicholas sat beside her in a classic bespoke tuxedo, his arm draped casually over the back of her chair, watching the stage with an expression of profound, unadulterated pride.

"Um... hello everyone," Ethan’s clear, strong voice echoed through the massive ballroom speakers. "A year ago, I had a broken heart and a lot of paper cranes. But thanks to Dr. Thorne, the doctors at Chicago Memorial, and... and my big sister Hannah..." Ethan paused, looking directly down at the front row with a bright, gap-toothed grin "...and thanks to Nicholas, who taught me how to fold a metal crane that doesn't get soggy... I'm going to run the school track team this spring."

The entire ballroom erupted into thunderous applause and laughter. Several society matrons openly wiped away tears, and the flashbulbs strobed like a summer storm.

Hannah felt a lump rise in her throat. She reached across the small space between their chairs and slipped her hand into Nicholas’s strong, warm palm. He instantly turned his hand over, interlocking his fingers tightly with hers, squeezing reassuringly.

Later that evening, after the speeches concluded and the gala transitioned into a joyful celebration of music, dancing, and charity auctions, Hannah and Nicholas slipped away from the crowded ballroom onto a quiet outdoor terrace overlooking the glittering lights of downtown Chicago.

The night air was cool, carrying the fresh scent of lake water and spring blossoms.

Nicholas leaned against the stone balustrade, swirling a glass of sparkling water, looking out at the skyline. Hannah stood beside him, resting her elbows on the stone ledge, watching the city lights twinkle in the distance.

"You did good tonight, Dr. Reed," Nicholas said softly, turning his head to look at her. "The foundation has already secured ten million dollars in private endowments. We're going to save hundreds of kids like Ethan."

"We did it together, Nicholas," Hannah corrected gently, turning to face him. "I provided the medical compass, but you provided the map and the engine."

Nicholas smiled—a warm, genuine smile that reached his dark eyes and completely melted the last remnants of the cold, ruthless exterior he had worn like armor for decades.

He set his glass down on the stone ledge, reached into his breast pocket, and pulled out a small, unassuming velvet box.

Hannah’s breath caught. She froze, her eyes dropping to the box in his hands.

"Nicholas..." she began, her voice suddenly feeling very small.

"I know," Nicholas interrupted quietly, stepping closer until he was standing directly in front of her, his gaze locked onto hers with absolute, burning intensity. "No drama. No high-society photographers shouting our names. No fake rings or hidden poison."

He slowly opened the velvet box. Inside rested a stunning, custom-designed ring featuring a deep green emerald surrounded by a delicate halo of brilliant-cut diamonds—unique, strong, and entirely one-of-a-kind.

"When you walked into my house eight months ago," Nicholas continued, his voice dropping into a low, vibrating register that made her heart race, "you saved my life. You didn't do it for money, or power, or status. You did it because it was right. You are the strongest, most brilliant, most stubborn woman I have ever known, and I cannot imagine a single day of my life without you standing beside me."

He didn't drop to one knee—his pride and his stubborn nature wouldn't allow it, and she wouldn't have expected it anyway. Instead, he simply reached out, his warm hands gently cupping her face, his dark eyes searching hers with a depth of vulnerability he showed to no one else in the world.

"Hannah Reed," Nicholas whispered against her lips. "Will you build an empire with me? For real this time?"

Hannah didn't hesitate for a single second. A radiant, tearful smile broke across her face, and the last walls around her heart crumbled away entirely.

May you like

"Yes," she whispered, her voice steady and clear. "Yes, Nicholas. Let's build it."
