Chapter 10 - The Open Horizon

The sun rose over Lake Michigan the following morning, casting a brilliant, golden hue across the sprawling stone courtyards of the Valenti estate.
Inside the grand master suite, the world was quiet, peaceful, and entirely alive.
Hannah woke up slowly, feeling the familiar, comforting weight of an arm wrapped securely around her waist. She turned her head against the crisp white cotton pillows and smiled.
Nicholas was still asleep beside her, his dark hair slightly messy across his forehead, his breathing deep and even. On the bedside table, catching the first rays of morning sunlight, sat the emerald engagement ring resting beside a small, perfectly folded metal paper crane.
No shadows lurked in the corners of the room. No hidden poisons, no fake smiles, no treacherous secrets waiting to detonate in the dark.
For the first time in her life, Hannah Reed felt completely, perfectly safe.
She gently untangled herself from his arm, slipping out of bed and pulling on a soft silk robe. Walking over to the large French doors leading out to the private balcony, she pushed them open, stepping out into the crisp morning air.
Below, on the impeccably manicured lawn near the edge of the lake, Ethan was already running around with a soccer ball, laughing as a golden retriever chased after him. Walter Bell stood nearby on the patio, sipping his morning coffee and watching the boy with a grandfatherly smile, completely in his element.
Hannah took a deep, refreshing breath of the lake air, feeling the profound strength of the foundation she had built with her own two hands—not just as a nurse, not just as a survivor, but as a queen in her own right.
Warm arms slid around her waist from behind, and a familiar, rough chin rested gently on her shoulder.
"You're up early," Nicholas murmured, his morning voice deep and gravelly against her ear.
"Just enjoying the view," Hannah replied, leaning back into his embrace, resting her hands over his.
"Not bad, is it?" Nicholas smiled, pressing a soft, lingering kiss to her temple.
"It’ll do," Hannah teased playfully, turning slightly in his arms to look up into his dark, devoted eyes. "As long as you promise to stop trying to drive armored cars into downtown traffic."
"Only if you promise to stop playing hero and letting me handle the security details," Nicholas countered with a low chuckle.
"Deal."

They stood there together on the balcony, watching the sunlight dance across the endless expanse of blue water, wrapped in each other's arms, looking out toward an open, beautiful horizon where the rest of their lives was finally waiting.
And for the first time, there were no locked doors, no hidden dangers, and no looking back—only the bright, unstoppable dawn of a happily ever after.
