Chapter 5 - The Avalanche

Chaos erupted in the grand ballroom.

Phones began to buzz, ring, and chime simultaneously across three hundred tables. High-powered executives stared at their screens in horror as push notifications from Bloomberg, the *Wall Street Journal*, and local news stations lit up the darkened room with breaking financial alerts:

*BREAKING: CROSSWELL LOGISTICS MERGER HALTED AMID ALLEGATIONS OF FRAUD AND EMBEZZLEMENT.*

Adrian felt the floor vanish beneath his feet. The brilliant, invincible empire he had spent a decade building was evaporating in real-time, burned down by the very woman he had dismissed as a housewife.

"You—you bitch," Adrian muttered, his voice cracking with sheer, unadulterated panic as he lunged toward the podium. "You ruined everything! Everything I built!"

Before Adrian could reach her, two burly private security guards hired by Arthur Vance materialized on either side of him, their massive hands gripping his shoulders with inescapable force.

"Unhand me!" Adrian roared, thrashing wildly, his designer tuxedo jacket twisting out of shape. "Do you know who I am? I am the CEO of this company!"

"Not anymore, Mr. Cross," Arthur Vance said calmly, stepping forward to block Adrian's path. "At 8:45 PM, the emergency board quorum voted unanimously to suspend your executive powers pending a full criminal and financial audit. You are officially barred from all Crosswell properties, accounts, and communications."

Vanessa began to hyperventilate. The rose-gold tulle gown that had made her feel like a queen now felt like a straitjacket. Surrounding guests were openly pointing, whispering, and backing away from her as if she carried a plague.

"Adrian, make them stop!" Vanessa shrieked, clutching at his arm as the security guards prepared to haul him out. "Tell them it's not true! Fix this!"

Adrian looked down at Vanessa, and for the first time, there was no affection in his eyes—only burning, venomous hatred. It was her expensive tastes, her endless demands, and his own blinding arrogance that had led him right into this trap.

"Get away from me," Adrian snarled, shaking her off so violently that she stumbled backward into a waiter carrying a tray of champagne flutes.

*Crash!*

Glass shattered across the marble floor as Vanessa hit the ground, the golden liquid soaking into the delicate tulle of her designer dress. The crowd watched without an ounce of sympathy, their expressions cold and unforgiving. High society had no room for losers, and tonight, Adrian and Vanessa were the biggest losers in Chicago.

Security dragged Adrian toward the service exit. As he passed Claire, he twisted his head around, his eyes burning with helpless fury.

"You think this is over, Claire?" he screamed, his voice echoing off the crystal chandeliers. "I will destroy you! I’ll take every penny you have left! I’ll see you in court until the day you die!"

Claire didn't flinch. She adjusted the lapel of her Vivienne Westwood gown, looked him dead in the eye, and offered a cold, devastating smile.

"Bring your lawyers, Adrian," she said softly, loud enough only for him to hear. "I'll be waiting with the guillotine."

The heavy doors slammed shut behind him, cutting off his frantic shouting.

Silence descended upon the ballroom once more, heavier and more profound than before. All eyes turned back to the stage, waiting to see what the new queen of Crosswell Logistics would do next.
