Chapter 2 - The Setup at the Grand Ballroom

The grand ballroom of the Drake Hotel in Chicago smelled of imported orchids, expensive perfume, and old money.
At 8:34 PM, the flashbulbs were popping like synchronized lightning against the marble steps. Photographers from *Chicago Social* and the *Financial Times* shoved against one another, eager to capture the arrival of the city’s elite. But tonight, all lenses were pointed squarely at one man.
Adrian Cross stepped out of the back of a gleaming black Maybach, adjusting the lapels of his midnight-blue tuxedo with practiced elegance. He looked like the king of the city—tall, silver-tempered at the temples, radiating the effortless confidence of a man who owned the room before he even crossed the threshold.
And on his arm was Vanessa Hale.
Vanessa was breathtaking in a diaphanous, rose-gold tulle gown that shimmered under the carriage lights. She leaned into Adrian’s side, her long blonde hair cascading over one bare shoulder, flashing a radiant, camera-ready smile that screamed *victory*.
"Everyone is looking at us," she murmured into Adrian's ear as they ascended the steps.
Adrian offered a tight, controlled smile, though his eyes scanned the crowd for any sign of social friction. "Let them look. By midnight, our position will be unassailable."
He had played his cards with ruthless precision. The Crosswell Foundation Gala was his baby; he controlled the board votes, he controlled the media narrative, and he had successfully relegated his wife—the legal co-heir of the family trusts—to the sidelines. He had sent her a message, expected her obedience, and assumed she would cower at home, nursing her wounded pride.
As they entered the soaring foyer beneath the crystal chandeliers, the hum of polite conversation dipped slightly.
He felt a few whispers ripple through the edges of the crowd. Heads turned. Glasses paused mid-sip.
Vanessa squeezed his arm tighter, thrilled by the scandalous undertone of their entrance. "They're whispering about us," she whispered gleefully.
"They're whispering about the merger," Adrian corrected smoothly, though a strange, cold knot began to form in the pit of his stomach. He expected murmurs about his mistress—society loved a discreet scandal—but the weight of the silence felt different. It wasn't the thrill of gossip. It was the tense, breathless quiet that precedes a falling axe.
They walked down the receiving line. Senior executives, politicians, and philanthropic board members nodded, but their eyes kept darting past Adrian’s shoulder, looking toward the heavy mahogany doors behind them.
"Adrian," muttered Marcus Vance, Arthur’s distant cousin and the head of the Crosswell Logistics auditing committee, stepping up with a glass of scotch in his hand. His expression was utterly unreadable.
"Marcus," Adrian nodded, maintaining his CEO poise. "Glad you could make it. I trust you reviewed the Vanguard acquisition papers I sent over this morning?"
Marcus took a slow sip of his drink. His eyes locked onto Adrian with a chilling intensity. "I reviewed them very carefully, Adrian. In fact, I found several fascinating discrepancies. Particularly regarding the ownership transfer of the primary shipping terminals."
Adrian’s jaw tightened. "We can discuss business on Monday, Marcus. Tonight is for celebration."
"Oh, I wouldn't be so sure about that," Marcus replied, a faint, humorless smirk touching his lips. He didn't look at Vanessa at all, treating her as if she were a ghost standing next to the man. "Timing, after all, is everything in high finance."
Before Adrian could demand an explanation, the orchestra struck up a polite, sweeping chord, signaling the official opening remarks of the evening.
Adrian guided Vanessa toward the front row of velvet-backed chairs near the dais. He felt a bead of sweat trace down his spine. Something was wrong. The air in the room felt thin, charged with static electricity.
He glanced at his Rolex. *8:50 PM.*
Where was Claire? She should have been home, miserable and isolated. Why did every face in this room look like they were waiting for a bomb to detonate?
Vanessa leaned toward him, her smile faltering for a fraction of a second as she caught the tension in his posture. "Adrian... what is that?"
Adrian didn’t answer.
His face had gone completely still.

Because at that exact second, the heavy double doors at the back of the ballroom swung open with a resounding, echoing click.
