Chapter 9 - The Gathering

Six months later, the Ellison family estate in the rolling hills outside Annapolis was lit up with twinkling fairy lights strung through the ancient oak trees for a late autumn celebration.
It was Thanksgiving—the first true family Thanksgiving they had hosted at the estate in over a decade.
The large mahogany dining table on the stone patio groaned under the weight of roasted turkey, honey-glazed ham, sweet potato casserole, cranberry relish, and endless pies baked by Marcus’s partner and family friends. Laughter echoed across the manicured lawns as children ran around playing tag near the garden fountain.
Mara stood on the back veranda, leaning against the wrought-iron railing with a glass of spiced cider in her hand. The evening air was crisp and cool, carrying the faint, earthy scent of fallen leaves and wood smoke from the outdoor fireplace.
Footsteps approached softly from behind.
"Penny for your thoughts, little sister," Adrian said, walking out onto the veranda and handing her a warm wool shawl, which he draped gently over her shoulders.
Mara pulled the shawl tight around herself, smiling as she looked out at her brothers. Marcus was arguing good-naturedly with Silas over the best way to carve the turkey while the rest of the family laughed nearby.
"I was just thinking about how grateful I am," Mara said softly, resting her head against Adrian’s shoulder. "For everything. For you guys showing up that night at the hotel... for never letting me lose myself."
Adrian put an arm around her, kissing the top of her head. "We didn't do anything special, Mara. We just protected our own. And honestly? You saved yourself the moment you walked out of that ballroom with your head held high."
"Do you ever think about... how different things could have been?" Mara asked quietly, watching the flickering flames of the fireplace dance against the stone.
"Maybe," Adrian replied thoughtfully. "But everything that happened led you right back to where you were always supposed to be: standing on your own two feet, building something real, and surrounded by people who love you unconditionally."
Mara smiled, a deep, radiant smile that reached all the way to her eyes. She took a sip of her cider, feeling the warmth spread through her chest.

She wasn't defined by the man who had tried to break her. She was defined by the strength she had found within herself, and the unbreakable fortress of family that stood beside her.
