Chapter 9 - A Father’s Final Voice

The paper of the envelope was stiff and crisp. I slid a finger beneath the seal, peeling it back carefully. Inside was a three-page letter, dated just three weeks before Dad fell into his final coma.
*My Dearest Claire,*
*If you are reading this, it means the storm I saw gathering on the horizon has finally broken. I pray that you and Elias are safe, and that my little granddaughter, Ren, is smiling.*
*I need to ask for your forgiveness first. By the time I realized the sickness in Marlo’s heart, my body was already betraying me. I was too weak to fight her openly without putting your mother through unimaginable terror while I was dying.*
*Marlo thought I didn't notice the missing statements. She thought the drugs made me blind to the withdrawals. But an old engineer always checks the gauges, Claire. When I confronted her quietly one evening, she didn't apologize. She laughed. She told me that she had found a way to take everything, because Marcus Vance had promised to marry her if she brought half a million dollars to the table to pay off his company's bridge loans.*
*When I refused to sign over the house, she threatened to destroy you. She told me she had hired someone to fabricate rumors about Ren's paternity, boasting that she would tear your marriage apart and leave you with nothing. She believed that if your life was ruined, your mother would have no choice but to rely entirely on her.*
Tears welled in my eyes, blurring the ink. Beside me, Mom was weeping into her hands, while Elias placed a comforting palm on the back of my neck.
*I could not save Marlo from her greed,* the letter continued, *but I could protect my true family. The flash drive in this box contains full audio recordings of the conversations Marlo had in my hospice room when she thought I was sleeping. She incriminated herself and Marcus Vance completely. They conspired to launder the stolen money through Marcus's offshore logistics accounts.*
*Furthermore, five years ago, before my diagnosis, I established an irrevocable offshore trust in Zurich. It was funded with the royalties from my industrial patents—assets Marlo never knew existed. The trust is deeded solely to you, Claire, and to Ren upon her twenty-first birthday.*
*Do not carry hatred in your heart, my darling girl. Hatred is what consumed your sister. Protect your daughter, love your husband, and care for your mother. I am at peace, knowing you are whole.*
*With all my love, Dad.*

I held the letter against my chest, sobbing softly. My father hadn't been a helpless victim drifting into the dark. In his final, agonizing weeks, he had laid a trap of absolute justice to shield us from beyond the grave.
