Chapter 7 - Whispers in the Suburbs

The aftermath of Marlo’s arrest rippled through our small community like a seismic shock. Within twenty-four hours, the local blotter had published her booking photo alongside details of the elder fraud investigation. But the digital realm was far less merciful than the courtroom.

By Tuesday afternoon, fake social media accounts began popping up on neighborhood forums and community boards. Vicious anonymous comments accused Elias of abusing his corporate influence to frame his sister-in-law, claiming that Marlo had been "silenced" because she uncovered dark secrets about our marriage.

"They're trying to control the narrative," Elias said, scrolling through a local Facebook thread on his tablet while sitting at our kitchen island. A vein throbbed at his temple. "Look at this wording. 'Poor Marlo was framed by an unfaithful wife desperate to protect her inheritance.' This is Marcus Vance’s PR machine at work. He’s funding her defense, and he’s using smear tactics to pollute the potential jury pool."

I set down a cup of chamomile tea in front of him. "Why would Marcus help her? He hated her when they broke up. He called her a compulsive liar."

"Because Marlo knows where Marcus buried his own bodies," Elias said darkly. "Remember when Marcus was investigated for insider trading at his logistics firm eighteen months ago? The investigation mysteriously evaporated. Marlo was his executive assistant back then. If she goes down, she takes him with her. Marcus isn't protecting Marlo; he’s protecting himself."

I looked over at Ren, who was happily stacking soft wooden blocks in her playpen. Her red hair caught the warm afternoon sunlight, glowing like spun copper. For an entire year, that hair had been a weapon used to torment my peace of mind. Now, it was a badge of resilience.

"Elias," I said, making up my mind. "We aren't going to hide. We aren't going to let them whisper in the shadows anymore."

"What are you thinking?"

"Post the truth. Not rumors, not gossip. The truth."

That evening, with the blessing of our legal counsel, Elias drafted a public statement on his verified professional profile. He posted the certified genetic lineage test—demonstrating with absolute scientific certainty that Ren was his biological daughter, inheriting the rare red-hair gene through his paternal great-grandmother, Clara Lindqvist. Alongside it, he attached the official statement from the State Attorney's Office detailing the criminal charges against Marlo, complete with the redacted bank audits showing the systematic draining of my father’s hospice fund.

The response was instantaneous and overwhelming. Hundreds of shares turned into thousands. Friends, colleagues, and neighbors flooded the comments with apologies, support, and outrage on our behalf. The whispers that had haunted my steps for over twelve months vanished into thin air, replaced by an impenetrable wall of public solidarity.

The smear campaign had collapsed in a single evening. But Marlo’s parting words in the courtroom still echoed in my mind like a ticking clock: *Check the safe.*
