Chapter 9 - The Guillotine Falls

Harrison stepped into the center of the courtroom, his presence commanding absolute authority.

"My Lady, this application has nothing to do with the welfare of Connor and Madison Sterling," Harrison began, his deep voice filling every corner of the vast chamber. "This entire charade is an act of desperate extortion. Yesterday evening, Mr. Sterling sent hired agents to intimidate my client at her temporary residence. He delivered a written threat targeting the children’s private school, demanding that Mrs. Sterling surrender fifty-one percent of her ancestral trust assets to bail out his insolvent hedge fund."

"That is an unproven allegation!" Bradley shouted from his table, rising to his feet in defiance of court protocol.

"Sit down, Mr. Sterling!" Lady Justice Thornton commanded, her gavel coming down with the crack of thunder. "One more outburst and you will be held in contempt and remanded to custody immediately!"

Bradley sank back into his leather chair, breathing heavily, his face mottled with purple rage.

Harrison did not even look at him. He simply reached into his leather portfolio and handed three sets of documents to the court usher.

"We submit Exhibit D, My Lady," Harrison continued calmly. "It contains the sworn affidavit of the courier apprehended yesterday, confirming Mr. Sterling’s personal authorization. More critically, it contains the preliminary findings of the Serious Fraud Office and the UK Border Force, executed two hours ago."

Bradley froze. The color instantly drained from his face.

"Explain," the judge instructed.

"Mr. Sterling arrived in the United Kingdom this morning aboard a private aircraft," Harrison stated. "Upon landing, his corporate accounts were served with a Mareva worldwide freezing injunction issued by the High Court of Chancery at eight o'clock this morning, in response to Mrs. Sterling's petition for the recovery of misappropriated trust capital."

A gasp swept through the reporters’ benches.

"Furthermore," Harrison added, his gaze finally turning to Bradley with cold, ruthless precision, "the United States Department of Justice has unsealed an indictment against Bradley Sterling for wire fraud, bank fraud, and falsification of financial statements regarding the misrepresentation of trust assets to obtain leveraged loans. The extradition warrant was delivered to the British Home Office twenty minutes ago."

Two uniformed Metropolitan Police officers entered the rear of Court 34, standing silently by the mahogany doors.

Bradley looked around wildly, staring at his lawyers. "Arthur! Alistair! Do something! Tell them this is a lie!"

Sir Alistair slowly closed his binder, took off his reading glasses, and took a deliberate step away from Bradley. "My Lady... in light of these developments, Carter & Sterling must formally withdraw our representation of the applicant, effective immediately."

"No!" Bradley screamed, slamming his hands onto the desk. "You can't do this to me! Sarah! Tell them! Sarah, look at me!"

I turned slowly in my chair and looked at the man I had feared for a decade.

He was no longer a titan. He was no longer a master of the universe. He was just a pathetic, hollow bully whose mountain of lies had collapsed beneath his own feet.

"You told me there was nothing worth dividing, Bradley," I said, my voice echoing across the silent courtroom. "You were right. Because you have nothing left."

Lady Justice Thornton banged her gavel. "The application under the Hague Convention is dismissed with indemnity costs awarded against Mr. Sterling. The applicant is remanded into police custody pending extradition proceedings. Court is adjourned."

The officers marched down the aisle, their handcuffs glinting in the light. Bradley fought, thrashing and cursing, screaming obscenities as the steel cuffs clicked around his wrists, but nobody listened. The journalists scrambled for the exits to broadcast the downfall of Greenwich's most arrogant hedge fund prince, leaving Bradley to be dragged down the stone steps into the holding cells below.
