Chapter 5 - Smoke and Mirrors

Sirens wailed in the distance, a chaotic symphony of emergency response echoing through the concrete canyons of the financial district. Alarms blared throughout the sixty-story tower, flashing an angry crimson light across the smoke-filled expanse of the executive office.
Coughing, I pulled myself up from the thick carpet, dusting glass shards off my designer blazer. Arthur was beside me, wheezing slightly but unharmed, his ancient eyes wide with shock as he stared at the blazing inferno that used to be my desk.
"Fire extinguishers! Now!" Arthur roared into the hallway, his voice surprisingly robust for a man of his years.
Within seconds, building security and emergency response teams flooded the room, discharging heavy chemical foam onto the roaring flames. Thick, acrid black smoke billowed toward the ventilation system, choking the air, but the fire was quickly contained before it could spread to the structural beams.
I stood near the shattered window, the cold autumn wind whipping my hair across my face, staring across the narrow gap between skyscrapers at the roof of the opposing building. Through the swirling haze of smoke, I could see a lone figure standing near the edge, holding a heavy-duty pneumatic launcher. Even from a hundred yards away, I recognized the slumped posture, the frantic, erratic movements.
Julian.
He wasn't just pathetic; he was completely unhinged. The realization that he had tried to assassinate me in broad daylight sent a chilling jolt down my spine, but it was quickly replaced by a hot, blinding fury. He hadn't just declared war on my corporation; he had declared war on my life.
"Madam Chairwoman! We need to evacuate the floor immediately!" the head of security shouted over the wailing alarms, rushing toward me with a protective shield.
"No," I said, my voice cutting through the chaos with terrifying coldness. "Get a tactical drone in the air right now. Track that bastard on the roof opposite us. Do not let him out of your sight. If he jumps into a vehicle, I want every traffic camera in the city locked onto his license plate."
"Yes, ma'am!" the security chief barked, immediately speaking into his shoulder radio.

Arthur wiped soot from his glasses, looking up at me with a mixture of awe and deep concern. "Nora... this has crossed the line from corporate warfare into terrorism. We need to hand this over to federal SWAT immediately. He’s going to kill someone."
"Let him try," I whispered, watching as the figure on the opposite roof suddenly dropped the launcher and sprinted toward the stairwell exit, swallowed up by the shadows of the concrete stairwell. "He thinks he’s a desperate fugitive fighting for his life. I’m going to show him what a real trap looks like."
