Chapter 5 - THE MEDIA STORM AND EMILY’S DESPERATE MOVE

By Thursday morning, the legal battle over my twin boys had exploded from a private family dispute into a full-scale public spectacle.

It turned out that Sarah Jenkins’s junior associate—disgruntled by months of verbal abuse and eager to burnish his own reputation—had leaked portions of the emergency custody filing and the Sterling family trust dispute to a prominent Columbus investigative blogger.

By sunrise, headlines blared across local news feeds and social media platforms:

*“CORPORATE HEIR MARK STERLING DISCOVERS TWIN SONS AT BABY SHOWER AFTER DUMPING EX-WIFE FOR ‘INFERTILITY’!”*

*“THE STERLING FAMILY TRUST WAR: BILLION-DOLLAR ESTATE THREATENED BY FRAUDULENT DIVORCE CLAIMS!”*

My phone buzzed incessantly with notifications from news reporters camped outside my apartment complex. Yellow school buses slowed down as they passed my building, and news vans with satellite dishes parked along the curbside like vultures waiting for a carcass.

I kept the blinds tightly drawn, sitting on the living room rug with Luke and Owen, building elaborate Lego towers to keep their minds distracted from the strange noise outside.

"Mommy, why are those big trucks outside?" Owen asked, holding a red plastic block. "Are they moving us?"

"No, buddy," I smiled gently, kissing the top of his messy brown curls. "Mommy’s just figuring out some paperwork. We’re not going anywhere."

Suddenly, a loud, frantic banging echoed against my front door.

It wasn't a reporter. Reporters knocked with polite, hesitant persistence. This was aggressive, heavy, and desperate.

I crept to the door, peeked through the peephole, and gasped.

It was Emily.

She wasn't wearing her glamorous maternity dresses or designer sunglasses anymore. Her hair was pulled back into a messy, frantic ponytail, her mascara slightly smeared around her swollen eyes. She looked panicked, unhinged, and dangerous.

I unlocked the deadbolt and pulled the door open just a few inches, using the safety chain to keep her from pushing her way inside.

"What do you want, Emily?" I asked coldly.

Emily grabbed the edge of the door, her fingers white-knuckled. "Open the damn door, Claire! We need to talk. Right now."

"We have nothing to talk about."

"You are destroying my life!" Emily shrieked, her voice cracking with hysteria. "Mark is locked in his study screaming at his lawyers! His mother has completely cut him off from the family accounts! And the media is outside calling me a homewrecker who stole a man with a secret family!"

A cold sense of satisfaction flickered in my chest, but I kept my face entirely neutral. "That sounds like a conversation you should be having with your husband, Emily, not his ex-wife."

"He doesn't care about me anymore!" Emily sobbed, her manicured nails scratching uselessly against the wood. "All he talks about are *his boys*. He spent three hours this morning looking at baby pictures of you two from Facebook! He’s obsessed with them, Claire! And if those twins get a claim on the Sterling estate, my baby gets pushed out!"

"Then maybe you shouldn't have married a man whose entire life was built on lies and arrogance," I replied evenly.

Before Emily could scream another threat, the elevator dinged down the hall, and heavy footsteps approached.

"Emily!" Mark’s voice boomed down the corridor as he rounded the corner, looking frantic and disheveled. He had clearly driven straight here after seeing the news leaks.

Mark skidded to a halt outside my door, staring in shock at Emily, then at me.

"Emily? What the hell are you doing here?" Mark demanded, grabbing her arm and trying to pull her away. "Are you out of your mind? You’re making everything ten times worse!"

"Don't you touch me, Mark!" Emily shrieked, whipping her arm out of his grip. "You lied to me! You told me she was barren! You told me you were completely clean of baggage! And now your mother is rewriting the entire family trust to hand everything to your *other* family!"

"Shut up! Just shut your mouth!" Mark hissed, his face turning crimson with embarrassment as neighboring apartment doors began to crack open to watch the drama unfold.

I looked at the two of them—the man who had discarded me because I wasn't 'valuable' enough, and the woman who had helped him tear my life apart—now tearing each other to pieces over money and status.

Slowly, deliberately, I reached out.

"Have a nice life," I whispered.

May you like

And I clicked the heavy safety chain into place and shut the door in their faces.
