Chapter 10 - HAPPILY EVER AFTER

The sun dipped low over the Westerville horizon, casting a warm, golden hue across the sprawling lawn of our home.

It was late autumn again—three years since that fateful Saturday afternoon at the baby shower when two little boys had burst through a doorway and changed the trajectory of all our lives forever.

The backyard was filled with laughter, the clinking of wine glasses, and the rich, mouth-watering aroma of grilled food. Diane stood by the patio table chatting animatedly with my parents, who had finally moved closer to town to be near their grandsons. The past wounds had long since healed, replaced by the warm, messy, beautiful reality of an extended family bound together by unconditional love.

Over by the massive oak tree, Luke and Owen—now six years old and brimming with endless energy—were helping Mark string up colorful fairy lights for the evening celebration.

"Daddy Mark! Is this high enough?" Luke shouted, holding the string of lights up toward the lower branch.

"Perfect, buddy! Hold it right there!" Mark called back, carefully securing the wire before climbing down the stepladder. He wiped his hands on his jeans, smiling as both boys ran up to him, proudly demanding high-fives.

I stood on the back porch, leaning against the wooden railing with a glass of sparkling cider in hand, watching the scene unfold.

Mark caught my eye across the lawn. He smiled—that warm, open, genuine smile that still made my heart skip a beat—and walked over toward the porch, leaving the boys to their games.

"Everything looks ready," Mark said softly, stepping up beside me and resting his arm comfortably around my waist.

"You did a wonderful job," I murmured, leaning my head against his shoulder.

"We did," Mark corrected gently, pressing a soft kiss to the top of my head.

Out on the lawn, Owen suddenly stopped running, cupped his hands around his mouth, and yelled across the yard at the top of his lungs:

"Mom! Dad! Come on! The party's starting!"

Mark and I exchanged a warm, knowing glance.

We walked down the porch steps together, hand-in-hand, stepping out onto the grass toward our boys, toward our family, and toward a future that stretched out before us—endless, bright, and wonderfully, happily ever after.
