Chapter 5 - The Bridal Suite Raid

At 2:15 AM, the cobblestone corridor outside the Marshall House on Broughton Street was illuminated by the flashing strobe lights of four Savannah Police cruisers.

Inside Suite 304, the air was thick with the scent of lilies, hairspray, and vintage champagne. Vivian Winslow was seated on a plush velvet armchair, meticulously steaming the delicate lace train of Taryn’s nine-thousand-dollar custom bridal gown. Charles Winslow stood by the mahogany bar, pouring himself a generous glass of bourbon while examining a printout of the venue’s liability waiver.

Taryn was sprawled across the king-sized bed in silk pajamas, holding her phone on a small tripod ring light, recording an emotional video for her social media stories.

"...and even though my heart is breaking for my dear sister Audrey after her terrible, clumsy fall tonight," Taryn sniffled into the camera, dabbing an imaginary tear from her eye, "she insisted from her hospital bed that the show must go on. True love waits for no one, and tomorrow, Evan and I will dedicate our ceremony to Audrey’s speedy recovery..."

BANG. BANG. BANG.

The heavy oak door rattled violently on its hinges.

"Savannah Police Department! Open the door!"

Charles froze, the bourbon bottle hovering mid-pour. Vivian dropped the garment steamer onto the Persian rug with a hiss of steam.

"What on earth?" Vivian gasped, smoothing her silk blouse. "At this hour? Charles, go tell those officers that this floor is privately reserved for the Winslow-Calder wedding party."

Charles set his glass down and pulled the door open, his face twisted into an arrogant scowl. "Look here, officers, I don't know what kind of noise complaint—"

Detective Hayes, flanked by four uniformed officers with ADA Evelyn Cross standing right behind them, pushed the door wide open, stepping decisively into the suite.

"Charles Winslow?" Hayes asked, his voice ringing with cold authority.

"Yes, I am. And you have no right to burst into my family's private suite without—"

"I have a signed search warrant for these premises, Mr. Winslow," Hayes interrupted, thrusting the multi-page legal document against Charles's chest. "And I have an active arrest warrant for Taryn Winslow."

Taryn’s phone slipped from her hands, clattering face-down onto the duvet. Her face turned an unnatural shade of chalk white. "W-what? Arrest warrant? For what? Daddy, what is this?"

Vivian lunged forward, placing herself between the officers and the bed. "This is an outrage! My daughter is getting married in twelve hours! Her fiancé is Evan Calder—the Calders of the Coastal Heritage Trust! You cannot touch her!"

"Ma'am, step back immediately," one of the female patrol officers commanded, unholstering a pair of steel handcuffs.

"Taryn Winslow," Detective Hayes announced, walking straight toward the bed. "You are under arrest for aggravated battery resulting in serious bodily injury, criminal reckless endangerment, and conspiracy to commit assault."

"No! No!" Taryn shrieked, scrambling backward against the ornate headboard like a cornered animal. "It was an accident! Audrey fell! I tried to catch her! Ask Jules! Ask my cousin Jules, he saw the whole thing!"

"We already spoke to Miss Chloe Vance, Miss Winslow," ADA Evelyn Cross said calmly from the doorway. "We have the 4K uncompressed footage. We have your audio whispering 'Watch this' directly into the microphone. We have your text messages instructing Jules to orchestrate a viral fall for your vlog. And we have your voice instructing him to delete the evidence."

The color drained from Taryn’s lips. She looked desperately toward her father. "Daddy! You said you took care of the video! You said the manager wiped the hard drives!"

Charles’s eyes widened in horror. "Taryn, shut your mouth!"

"Too late, Mr. Winslow," Detective Hayes said, gesturing to the officers. "Officer Miller, secure the suspect."

The female officer stepped forward, grabbed Taryn’s arms, pulled them firmly behind her back, and clicked the cold steel handcuffs around her wrists.

"Get off me! Daddy! Mommy! Do something!" Taryn screamed, thrashing against the officer's grip. Her silk pajamas twisted, and her carefully styled hair fell into a wild, disheveled tangle. "Evan! Where is Evan? Call Evan!"

"Mr. Calder was the one who filed the initial police report, Miss Winslow," Cross said smoothly. "He also formally rescinded your marriage license at the Chatham County Clerk's emergency registry an hour ago."

Taryn let out a piercing shriek of pure rage and panic as she was hauled off the bed.

"You can't do this!" Vivian screamed, grabbing Detective Hayes's arm. "We are prominent citizens! We paid for that venue! We paid sixty thousand dollars today—"

"Speaking of that money, Mrs. Winslow," ADA Cross stepped forward, pulling a separate sealed document from her portfolio. "This is an emergency preservation and seizure order. You are formally under criminal investigation for grand theft and corporate embezzlement regarding the unauthorized transfer of sixty-two thousand dollars from Palmetto Harbor Design LLC. All your personal and commercial accounts are frozen as of 1:15 AM."

Vivian’s jaw dropped. She staggered backward against the dresser, clutching her throat. "Frozen? But... the florists! The caterers! The deposits!"

"There is no wedding, Mrs. Winslow," Hayes said firmly, guiding the weeping, hyperventilating Taryn toward the door. "Take her down to Central Booking."

As the officers marched Taryn down the hallway in handcuffs, her screams echoing off the historic hotel’s plaster walls, guests began opening their doors, filming the spectacle on their smartphones.

Charles Winslow stood paralyzed in the center of the trashed bridal suite, the wedding dress lying crumpled on the floor, his entire family's facade collapsing into ruins around him.
