Chapter 4 - The Midnight Warrant

By 1:30 AM, the emergency department at Memorial Health had quieted down, but my cubicle was buzzing with activity.
Dr. Bennett returned with an anesthesiologist to review my pre-operative paperwork. "The surgery is scheduled for 6:00 AM sharp, Audrey," Dr. Bennett said, checking the reflexes in my upper legs with a small rubber hammer. Still nothing. "We'll be performing a posterior thoracic laminectomy to relieve the pressure on your spinal cord, followed by spinal instrumentation—inserting titanium rods and pedicle screws across four vertebrae to stabilize the column."
"Will I be able to walk after the surgery?" I asked, my voice barely audible over the hum of the monitors.
"The decompression gives your nerves the best possible chance to recover, but spinal shock can last for weeks, even months. Physical therapy will be rigorous. But right now, stopping further neurological decline is our only priority."
As Dr. Bennett stepped out, Detective Hayes returned, accompanied by an elegant, sharp-eyed woman wearing a trench coat over a tailored navy suit. Her hair was cut into a sleek bob, and she carried a thick leather portfolio under her arm.
"Audrey," Hayes introduced, "this is Assistant District Attorney Evelyn Cross from the Special Victims and Major Crimes Division. When I showed her the footage and the banking timestamps, she came down here immediately."
ADA Evelyn Cross stepped to my bedside, offering a warm, firm handshake. Her gaze was fierce and analytical.
"Miss Winslow, I've reviewed the 4K footage Miss Vance provided," Cross said, wasting no time. "In twelve years of prosecuting violent crimes in Savannah, I have rarely seen an aggravated battery captured with such indisputable clarity. Your sister’s intent, premeditation, and depraved indifference are fully documented."
"My parents are trying to cover it up," I told her, my voice strengthening despite the pain. "My father already pressured the venue manager to hide or delete the security footage. And my mother took my company’s operating capital to ensure Taryn’s wedding went ahead tomorrow."
"They won't get the chance," ADA Cross replied coldly. "At 12:45 AM, I woke Superior Court Judge Harrison. Based on the video evidence, Miss Vance’s sworn deposition, and the electronic audit logs from your bank, Judge Harrison signed three separate search warrants and an immediate bench warrant for the arrest of Taryn Winslow."
A chill ran down my spine. "You're arresting her tonight?"
"The wedding was scheduled for 2:00 PM tomorrow at the Cathedral Basilica of St. John the Baptist," Cross said. "Given your family's clear efforts to suppress evidence and their active financial fraud, Taryn Winslow poses an immediate flight risk and an active danger to the administration of justice. Furthermore, Judge Harrison granted an emergency asset freeze order against Winslow Antiques & Estate Liquidation LLC and all associated personal accounts held by Charles and Vivian Winslow."
Cross looked down at my phone on the tray. "Your corporate bank, First Coastal Commercial, was served with a digital court injunction twenty minutes ago. The sixty-two-thousand-dollar transfer has been flagged as an unauthorized fraudulent transaction under investigation for grand larceny. The receiving account at Southern Trust has been frozen before the funds could be disbursed to wedding vendors."
A massive weight seemed to lift from my chest, though the physical ache in my spine remained agonizing. My employees would be protected. The millwork contractors wouldn't be left holding worthless checks.
"What happens to my parents?" I asked.
"Your father's actions at the venue constitute felony tampering with evidence and witness tampering under Georgia law," Cross explained. "Our officers are currently impounding the venue’s digital video recording servers under a preservation warrant. If that manager deleted a single byte of data at your father's request, both of them will be taken into custody. As for your mother, using emergency signatory authority to execute an unauthorized personal transfer of corporate funds to an entity facing commercial foreclosure is classic embezzlement and grand theft."

"Are you going to the hotel now?" I asked.
Detective Hayes checked his wristwatch. "Taryn and your parents are staying in the bridal suites at the historic Marshall House on Broughton Street. We have three squad cars rolling right now. We aren't waiting for the wedding bells, Miss Winslow. We’re shutting this down tonight."
