Chapter 6 - Under the Knife

The ceiling tiles blurred into streaks of fluorescent white as the orderly wheeled my gurney into Operating Room 4. The rhythmic beeping of cardiac monitors and the sterile chill of the air felt strangely peaceful compared to the circus in the hallway. An oxygen mask was placed over my face, carrying a sweet, metallic scent.

*“Count backward from ten, Tessa,”* the anesthesiologist said softly.

*Ten. Nine. Eight...*

Darkness claimed me instantly.

While the surgical team spent four grueling hours cutting through scarred tissue, realigning shattered bone fragments, and drilling titanium anchors into my shoulder, an entirely different kind of dismantling was unfolding in the world outside.

In the surgical waiting room, Dad sat drinking black coffee with Caleb. Across from them, the wall-mounted television was muted, but the scrolling ticker at the bottom of the regional news broadcast told the story: *VIRAL "POOL PUSH" BRIDE UNDER INVESTIGATION FOR AGGRAVATED ASSAULT; LOCAL CHARITY BOARD SUSPENDS PROMINENT SOCIALITE EVELYN VALE.*

Lena’s life, built meticulously on an architecture of vanity and superficial validation, was imploding at catastrophic speed.

The bridal boutique that had sponsored Lena’s custom dress issued an immediate statement severing ties with her, demanding payment for promotional garments she had worn under contract. The luxury resort in the Maldives where Julian and Lena were supposed to be spending their honeymoon abruptly canceled their reservation following thousands of outraged direct messages, declaring that their establishment "did not welcome perpetrators of domestic and familial violence."

Even worse for Lena was the silence from Julian.

After fleeing the hospital to avoid arrest, Julian had returned to his family’s gated estate, where his father, Richard Sterling—a ruthless corporate attorney who valued his firm’s reputation above blood itself—confronted him in the study.

"She shoved an injured girl into eight feet of water on camera, Julian," Richard had said, staring at his son with disgust. "The girl could have drowned. The entire country thinks our family married into a clan of sociopaths. The firm's largest corporate client just threatened to pull their retainer if we don't distance ourselves."

"Dad, she said it was just a joke—"

"A joke?" Richard threw a legal brief onto the mahogany desk. "Her sister is currently under general anesthesia undergoing major reconstructive surgery. The District Attorney’s office called me as a professional courtesy. Lena will be formally charged with aggravated assault and reckless endangerment before the end of the week. You have two choices: you sign the petition for an immediate annulment on grounds of fraud and moral turpitude, or you pack your bags and leave this firm with nothing."

Julian stood there, his newly minted wedding band feeling like a shackle of burning lead.

Back in the hospital, the red light above Operating Room 4 finally clicked off. Dr. Vance emerged into the waiting area, pulling off his surgical cap and wiping sweat from his forehead.

Dad jumped to his feet, Caleb right beside him. "Doctor? How is she?"

"She pulled through," Dr. Vance said, offering a tired, reassuring smile. "It was worse than the MRI showed—the labrum was almost completely avulsed, and the fracture was unstable. But we placed the pins, secured the anchors, and repaired the capsule. She’s in recovery now. The road ahead will require incredible discipline, Mr. Vale. But your daughter is tough. Stronger than any of you realize."

Dad exhaled a breath he seemed to have held for twenty years, covering his face with his trembling hands.
