Chapter 12 - Broken Facades

Two days before Lena’s formal plea hearing, Evelyn attempted one final, desperate maneuver to rescue her ruined social empire.
She launched a self-produced video across local community forums. Sitting in a staged living room with soft lighting, wearing an elegant ivory blouse, Evelyn dabbed at her eyes and spoke directly into the camera.
*"To our beloved Oakridge community,"* she began, her voice quivering with theatrical sorrow. *"I am speaking today not as a socialite, but as a heartbroken mother. What occurred at my daughter Lena’s wedding was a devastating family tragedy—a reckless moment of youthful exuberance that has been weaponized by greedy attorneys and an alienated daughter who has long suffered from deep psychological instability. Tessa has chosen to destroy her sister out of bitterness, using our family's private pain for financial gain. I forgive Tessa, and I pray she finds peace before she obliterates the family that gave her everything."*
For three hours, Evelyn thought she had regained control of the narrative. A few older society acquaintances even left sympathetic comments.
Then the counter-strike landed.
Dad didn't post a tearful video. Instead, through Caleb’s legal portal, he published the complete forensic audit of Tessa’s stolen trust fund, alongside the certified medical timeline of my injuries and a sworn affidavit from Dr. Vance confirming that Lena’s push had nearly caused permanent neurological damage to my arm.
Even worse for Evelyn, Dad released the audio recording from the hospital hallway—captured on Caleb’s phone—where Evelyn had shrieked: *“Lena is my masterpiece, and I won’t let this little cripple drag her down!”*
The public response was instantaneous and catastrophic.
The charity board that Evelyn had founded twenty years earlier issued a public statement permanently expelling her from their organization and initiating an independent financial audit of her tenure as treasurer.
By nightfall, Julian’s family firm released a formal press release announcing that Richard Sterling had filed a criminal complaint against Evelyn Vale for corporate extortion, revealing that she had threatened to release fabricated stories about Julian unless the Sterling family paid Lena a two-million-dollar divorce settlement.
The facade hadn't just cracked; it had disintegrated into dust.
That evening, Dad, Caleb, and I sat in our warm, brightly lit kitchen. Dad was cooking his signature beef stew, the rich aroma filling every corner of the house. For the first time in as long as I could remember, the air in our home was light, free of tension, free of the suffocating need to tiptoe around Evelyn’s fragile ego or Lena’s explosive jealousy.
My sling had been adjusted to a lighter brace earlier that day. I could wiggle my fingers freely, and the deep, throbbing ache in my shoulder had subsided to a dull, manageable stiffness.
"You did well today, Tess," Dad said, placing a steaming bowl in front of me and kissing the top of my head. "Your grandmother would be proud of you. She left that fund so you could open your own design studio. And that's exactly what you're going to do once this is all over."
I smiled, feeling a genuine warmth spread through my chest. "We’re going to do it together, Dad."
Caleb sat across from me, his eyes gentle and filled with an emotion that had grown deeper, more undeniable with every passing day. He reached across the table, covering my left hand with his own. "Tomorrow is the settlement conference before the criminal trial, Tessa. Lena’s lawyer reached out. They’re terrified. They want to surrender."
"No surrender without justice," I said quietly.

Caleb grinned, that familiar, dangerous spark dancing in his dark eyes. "That's my girl."
