Chapter 6 - The Ledger of Betrayal

Dan took the envelope out of her hands before she could pull it back. Vanessa tried to snatch it back, but Dan held it well out of reach, ripping open the seal under the glare of the porch light.

Inside were carbon copies of commercial loan applications dated thirty-six months back—the exact period when I had expanded *The Sugared Whisk* into our current downtown location. My name was signed at the bottom in neat cursive, but the stroke of the 'M' had that unmistakable right-leaning slant that belonged to Philip, not me.

"Where did you get these?" I demanded, the blood draining from my face.

"Philip kept a safe behind the tool rack in the garage," Vanessa sneered, crossing her arms defensively over her trench coat. "He thought he was being clever. He told me it was his 'insurance policy' in case you ever tried to push him out of the family finances. I took the documents the day the scandal broke. If I go down, Molly, your little dream goes down with me. Drop Arthur's civil suit. Let Philip keep the house so he can support me and the baby. Otherwise, Knox County Federal Credit Union gets an anonymous tip tomorrow morning about bank fraud."

Dan slowly scanned the documents, his jaw tightening so hard the muscles jumped in his cheek. But instead of the panic Vanessa expected, Dan let out a low, dry chuckle.

"You really are as stupid as you are greedy, Vanessa," Dan said calmly.

Vanessa blinked, thrown off balance. "What are you talking about?"

"Molly restructured *The Sugared Whisk* under a completely new corporate umbrella twenty-eight months ago when we bought out the downtown lease," Dan explained, waving the papers. "These loan applications were filed under the old sole proprietorship account—the one Philip had co-signing privileges on before we closed it. Philip didn't tie the debt to Molly. He tied it directly to his own commercial line of credit at Knox County Federal. The bank didn't approve the LLC transfer because Molly wasn't present to notarize it."

I looked at Dan, the puzzle pieces clicking together in my mind. "The rejected expansion loan from three years ago... the one Dad said was denied due to market volatility?"

"He didn't get denied," Dan said, looking back at Vanessa with utter disdain. "He took the money out under his own name, pocketed the cash, and told you the bank turned you down so you wouldn't ask questions. These aren't Molly's debts, Vanessa. They're Philip's personal felony convictions."

Vanessa's face drained of every drop of color. "No... that's not true. He told me—"

"He lied to you, just like he lied to us," I said, stepping close enough that she had to look directly into my eyes. "Thank you for bringing us the evidence, Vanessa. Arthur won't even need a subpoena now."
