Chapter 11 - The Eviction

That afternoon, while Mom oversaw the final packing at Elm Street and Dan managed the bakery, Arthur requested my presence at the county courthouse for the formal eviction hearing regarding Vanessa's residence.

The townhouse Philip had rented for Vanessa was owned by an LLC affiliated with the family hardware business. Because Mom now controlled the controlling shares of the company assets, she had the absolute legal right to terminate the occupancy.

When Vanessa walked into the courtroom, she looked dramatically different from the manic woman who had stood on my lawn in the rain. She wore a tailored black maternity dress, her hair pulled back into an elegant chignon, her hands resting deliberately on her slight baby bump. Her public defender sat beside her, looking bored and overworked.

"Your Honor," Vanessa's attorney began, "my client is six months pregnant with the co-owner's child. An expedited twenty-four-hour eviction constitutes extreme emotional and physical hardship—"

"The co-owner, Philip Vance, has relinquished all management rights in a signed agreement witnessed by the county clerk," Arthur interrupted smoothly, stepping forward and handing a packet of documents to the bailiff. "Furthermore, Knox County Child Protective Services has already opened an inquiry into Ms. Cross following multiple police dispatches involving harassment and trespassing at the residence of Molly and Daniel Harris."

The judge, a no-nonsense woman in her sixties with silver hair, skimmed the documents with a furrowed brow. She looked over her reading glasses straight at Vanessa.

"Ms. Cross, you are not a tenant on this lease," Judge Martinez stated flatly. "You are an unauthorized occupant of a commercial property whose leaseholder has surrendered the premises. Your claim of tenancy is denied. You have until tomorrow at noon to remove your personal effects. A sheriff's deputy will be present to ensure compliance."

Vanessa leaped to her feet, knocking her wooden chair back with a loud clatter. "This is biased! You're letting these people destroy me! Philip promised me that house! He promised me half of his estate!"

"One more outburst, young lady, and you will spend the next forty-eight hours in contempt holding," Judge Martinez warned, her voice vibrating with authority. "Court is adjourned."

Vanessa glared across the aisle at me, her eyes burning with pure, unadulterated hatred. As the deputy stepped between us, she leaned forward, her lips parting to whisper words meant only for me:

"You took everything from me, Molly. Don't think for one second that you're going to keep yours."
