Chapter 7 - The Gathering Storm

Despite the public victory at the Solstice Gala, the peace within Rome was an illusion, paper-thin and ready to shatter at any moment.

Two days had passed. The media had run rampant with rumors of the mysterious return of Don Vitale’s estranged wife and secret twin heirs. Outside the fortified walls of Villa Vitale, reporters, paparazzi, and heavily disguised spotters from rival syndicates lingered along the perimeter roads.

Inside the villa, however, an entirely different world existed.

In the sunny glass sunroom overlooking the blooming rose gardens, Alessandro sat cross-legged on a plush carpet—a sight that would have sent shockwaves through the European criminal underworld. He was meticulously assembling a plastic race track with Leo, while Mia sat on his lap, carefully placing colorful stickers on the miniature cars.

"No, Mia, the flame sticker goes on the side, like this," Leo instructed with grave seriousness, pointing with his tiny finger. "It makes the car go faster."

"Flames don't make it faster, Leo," Mia retorted with an air of superior wisdom. "Wheels make it faster. Mamma said so."

Alessandro chuckled, the deep, warm sound vibrating from his chest. "Your mother is a very wise woman, Mia. But your brother is right about style. A Vitale always drives with style."

Elena stood in the doorway, leaning against the frame with a fresh pot of coffee, watching the scene unfold. Her heart ached with a sweet, agonizing warmth. For five years, she had envisioned what a father would look like for her twins. She had imagined an ordinary man—perhaps a teacher or a carpenter—who came home with clean hands and read them bedtime stories. She had never imagined that the ruthless Mafia Don who commanded an army of killers would be the gentlest, most attentive father she had ever witnessed.

Alessandro looked up, catching her gaze. The predatory intensity in his eyes was completely gone, replaced by a soft, vulnerable warmth reserved exclusively for her.

"Coffee?" Elena asked, walking into the room and setting the tray on a side table.

"You read my mind, *cara*," Alessandro said, gently setting Mia down on the carpet next to her brother. He stood up, stretching his towering frame, and walked over to Elena.

As she poured the dark espresso into a porcelain cup, Alessandro stepped close behind her. His hands settled gently on her hips, his thumbs brushing against the soft fabric of her linen dress. Elena’s breath hitched, but she didn't pull away. The natural magnetism between them, dormant for five years, had reignited into an undeniable blaze.

"You look tired," she murmured, handing him the cup without turning around.

Alessandro took the cup, setting it down immediately on the table, and wrapped both arms around her waist, pulling her back against his broad chest. He buried his face in the crook of her neck, inhaling deeply the jasmine scent that grounded his chaotic soul.

"I haven't slept more than two hours a night since you left, Elena," he whispered against her warm skin, his stubble grazing her neck. "Being in this house with you... hearing our children laugh in the next room... it feels like waking up from a five-year nightmare. I am terrified that if I close my eyes, I will wake up and find you gone again."

Elena rested her hands over his large, calloused fingers. "I'm not running anymore, Alessandro. I spent five years running. It’s exhausting." She turned slowly in his embrace, looking up into his tired, handsome face. "But Salvatore Ferrini isn't going to let this go. You humiliated him in front of the entire world. A man like that would rather burn Rome to the ground than accept defeat."

Alessandro’s expression hardened, the protective alpha instinct surging to the surface. "Salvatore is a dead man walking. His allies on the Commission have abandoned him. Don Lucchese has already sanctioned an economic blockade against the Ferrini ports. By next week, Salvatore will be bankrupt and isolated."

Before Elena could reply, the heavy double doors of the sunroom swung open. Enzo stepped inside, his face pale and his breathing ragged.

"Boss," Enzo said, his voice laced with urgent dread. "We have a critical situation."

Alessandro immediately stepped in front of Elena, shielding her with his body as his hand moved instinctively to the holster concealed beneath his jacket. "What is it?"

"It’s Don Salvatore," Enzo said, swallowing hard. "He was found dead thirty minutes ago in his private study in Milan."

Elena gasped, covering her mouth.

Alessandro frowned, his eyes narrowing. "Dead? How? Lucchese was supposed to arrest him for the Commission tribunal tomorrow."

"It wasn't Lucchese," Enzo replied grimly. "Salvatore was shot three times in the chest with a hollow-point bullet. His throat was cut. And the shooter left a message written in his blood across the wall."

"What message?" Alessandro demanded, his voice dropping into a dangerous growl.

Enzo looked at Elena, his eyes full of fear. "*Blood for blood. The Vitale heirs will burn.*"

A suffocating silence descended upon the sunroom.

"Beatrice," Elena whispered, her voice trembling. "It was Beatrice."

"It has to be," Enzo confirmed. "Beatrice’s personal bank accounts were completely liquidated this morning. Forty million euros, Boss. She hired the *Macellai*—the Butchers of Marseille. A rogue mercenary syndicate that operates without rules, without honor, and without fear of the Commission. They don't care about underworld politics. They only care about cash."

Alessandro’s entire body went rigid with murderous rage. He turned to Elena, his hands gripping her shoulders with fierce, unyielding intensity.

"Enzo, initiate Lockdown Protocol Alpha immediately," Alessandro commanded, his voice ringing with absolute authority. "Move Elena and the children to the reinforced subterranean safe room. Seal the blast doors. Activate the perimeter automated turrets. I want every soldier we have stationed on the inner perimeter."

"Wait, Alessandro!" Elena cried, clutching his lapels. "What are you going to do?"

Alessandro looked down at her, his gray eyes burning like molten steel.

May you like

"I am going to end this, Elena," he said, cupping her face with both hands and pressing a fierce, desperate kiss to her lips—a kiss full of five years of longing, passion, and lethal promise. "I am going to hunt Beatrice Ferrini to the ends of the earth. And I will make sure she never draws breath to threaten my family again."
