Chapter 4 - The Proof in the Blood

Dawn broke over Rome not with sunlight, but with a somber gray haze that cast long shadows across Alessandro’s private study.
The room was quiet, save for the crackle of a dying fire in the stone hearth and the gentle clinking of a silver spoon against porcelain. Elena sat on a deep leather armchair, clutching a cup of chamomile tea, her eyes bruised with exhaustion. On the mahogany desk between them sat a thick manila envelope sealed with red wax from Doctor Rossi’s clinic.
Alessandro stood by the floor-to-ceiling windows, watching the morning mist cling to the manicured gardens below. He had not slept a single minute. The weight of five lost years hung heavily on his broad shoulders.
"Open it," Elena said, her voice steady. "You need to see it for yourself, don't you? Even after seeing their faces, the great Don Alessandro Vitale needs scientific validation."
Alessandro turned around slowly. He looked at the envelope on the desk, then at Elena.
"I don't need a test to know they are mine," Alessandro said quietly. "I knew the moment I looked into their eyes in the alley. I knew the moment my son held up his little toy car to defend you."
"Then why did you make Doctor Rossi run the samples?"
Alessandro walked over to the desk, picking up the heavy envelope. He ran his thumb over the wax seal. "Because the mafia does not run on gut feelings, Elena. It runs on law, blood, and proof. The Five Families are already convening an emergency council because I severed ties with the Ferrinis last night. Salvatore Ferrini is claiming I insulted his bloodline without cause. When I present this to the council, it will legally solidify Leo as the sole heir to the Vitale empire. It renders any claim the Ferrinis had completely obsolete."
With a crisp rip, Alessandro tore open the envelope and pulled out the crisp white documents.
His eyes scanned the lines of genetic sequencing, moving down to the bottom of the second page.
*Probability of Paternity: 99.999%*
*Subject A (Leonardo Vitale): Confirmed biological son of Alessandro Vitale.*
*Subject B (Mia Vitale): Confirmed biological daughter of Alessandro Vitale.*
Even though he had known, seeing the words printed in black and white struck him like a physical blow. A sudden tightness seized his chest, making it difficult to breathe. Five years. Sixty months of believing his lineage was doomed, of believing his heart had withered away the night Elena left, only to find out that his blood had been thriving in secret, surviving through the sheer will of the woman he had loved and lost.
He set the papers down, his hands trembling slightly—a rare crack in his impenetrable armor.
"They have your temper, you know," Elena said softly, watching his reaction. The bitterness in her tone had faded, replaced by an overwhelming melancholy. "Leo doesn't back down from anyone. When the older boys in our neighborhood tried to take Mia’s ribbon last year, he fought three of them at once. He came home with a black eye and a bloody nose, but he had the ribbon."
A faint, proud smile tugged at the corner of Alessandro’s mouth. "And Mia?"
"Mia is quiet," Elena replied, looking down into her tea. "She observes everything. She knows when someone is lying before they even finish their sentence. She sits by the window when it rains, staring outside for hours. Just like you used to do when you were planning a move against the Camorra."
Alessandro stepped around the desk and knelt before her armchair, mirroring the position he had taken in the alley with his son. He reached out, gently covering her trembling hands with his large, warm palms.
"Elena," he murmured, his voice thick with raw emotion. "I am sorry."
Elena froze, her breath catching in her throat. Alessandro Vitale never apologized. He was a man who dictated terms to prime ministers and cartel leaders. An apology from him was something unprecedented in the history of the underworld.
"You don't get to say that," she whispered, her throat constricting as tears welled up in her eyes. "You don't get to kneel here and say you're sorry after five years of hell! Do you know what it was like? Giving birth alone in a charity clinic in Naples? Holding two screaming babies with twenty euros in my pocket, constantly looking over my shoulder, terrified that every black car passing by had your executioners inside?!"
"Elena—"
"I had nightmares every night, Alessandro!" she cried, pulling her hands free from his grasp and standing up, backing away toward the fireplace. "Nightmares that you would find us and rip them away from me! And now here we are! In your mansion! Surrounded by your guns and your guards! And I am still terrified!"
Alessandro rose slowly to his feet, towering over the room, but his posture was defeated, his head slightly bowed.
"I will never take them from you," he swore, his voice rumbling with an intensity that vibrated through the floorboards. "You are their mother. You gave them life, you kept them safe, and you raised them to be strong. If you want to leave this city tomorrow, I will buy you an estate in Switzerland, in London, anywhere on the globe. I will fund every luxury, every school, every dream they ever have. But I will not let you live in hiding like a criminal. Not anymore."
Elena stared at him, her chest heaving as tears tracked down her cheeks. "And what about you, Alessandro? What happens to you if we leave?"
Alessandro’s gray eyes locked onto hers, burning with five years of suppressed grief and enduring obsession.
"I will remain here," he said hoarsely. "I will eliminate every threat that ever frightened you. I will dismantle the Ferrini family piece by piece. And when the world is finally safe for my children... I will spend the rest of my miserable life begging you to forgive me."
Before Elena could answer, the heavy study door pushed open with a soft squeak.
Standing in the doorway, dressed in oversized flannel pajamas that the housekeeper had found, were the twins. Mia was holding an empty plastic cup, rubbing her sleepy eyes, while Leo stood alert, clutching his battered toy car, looking between his mother’s tear-stained face and the giant man standing before her.
"Mamma?" Mia whispered, her small voice cutting through the heavy tension of the room. "Is it breakfast time? Leo says the big castle has pancakes."
Alessandro looked down at the two children, and the ferocious Don simply melted away. He dropped to his knees once more, holding out his arms with a tender, hesitant smile.
"Pancakes?" Alessandro asked softly. "Little soldier, this castle has the best pancakes in all of Italy. With strawberries and chocolate. Would you like that?"
Leo looked at his mother, seeking permission. Elena wiped her tears quickly with the sleeve of her robe, offering a faint, watery nod.
Leo’s face lit up, and without another moment of hesitation, he sprinted across the Persian rug and launched himself straight into Alessandro’s broad chest. Mia followed a second later, giggling as Alessandro scooped both of them up into his arms, rising to his full height with the two most precious treasures in the world held tightly against his heart.
Over the heads of their children, Alessandro’s eyes met Elena’s.

The war with the Ferrinis was coming. Blood would inevitably be spilled on the streets of Rome. But looking at the family he had thought was lost forever, Alessandro knew he would burn down the entire world before he let anyone take this away from him again.
