Chapter 7 - Shadows in the Nursery

The bail conditions had kept Evelyn confined to the Vance mansion in Oakridge, but an ankle monitor could not restrain a woman whose entire empire of lies was crumbling around her ears.
Inside the cavernous, quiet house, Evelyn paced the length of the drawing room like an animal in a cage. Her phone had been confiscated by the police, but she had managed to secure a burner phone through her brother.
The TV was on mute, showing Alexander’s face on CNBC, beneath a ticker that read: *VANCE ENTERPRISES BOARD OUSTS FOUNDER ARTHUR VANCE; ALEXANDER VANCE APPOINTED INTERIM CEO.*
“Interim CEO,” Evelyn hissed, her manicured fingers clawing at the leather armchair until the fabric tore. “That little bastard took everything.”
The front door opened, and Chloe walked in.
The teenager looked shattered. Her high-school friends had completely turned on her; the country club had revoked their family membership, and her social media accounts had been flooded with tens of thousands of messages calling her an abuser, a monster, and a coat-rack bully. She had spent the last two days locked in her car crying.
“Mom,” Chloe whimpered, dropping her designer backpack onto the floor. “We have to leave. People are throwing eggs at the gate. Paparazzi are using drones to look into my bedroom window!”
Evelyn didn't look at her. “We’re not leaving. If we leave now, we forfeit the bail, the assets will be frozen permanently, and we won’t have a single dime to our names.”
“I don't care about the money!” Chloe shouted, tears cutting tracks through her makeup. “I want this to stop! Everyone knows what you did to Leo! Everyone saw the photos!”
Evelyn whipped around, her eyes wide, wild, and utterly devoid of sanity. She crossed the room and slapped Chloe across the face with such force that the girl fell onto the hardwood floor.
“Do not speak to me like that!” Evelyn screamed, towering over her daughter. “You enjoyed it! You laughed when he was holding those coats! You filmed it! You’re just as guilty as I am, Chloe! Do you think Alexander is going to spare you? You’re Eleanor’s stepdaughter—he despises you!”
Chloe lay on the floor, holding her burning cheek, looking up at the woman who had raised her. In that single, horrifying moment, the illusion of her mother’s glamour and perfection shattered into a million sharp, bloody pieces. She saw Evelyn for what she truly was: a monster who would consume her own child if it meant saving her own skin.
Evelyn turned back to the window, pulling the burner phone from her pocket and dialing a number.
“It’s me,” Evelyn said into the receiver, her voice dropping into a frantic, low whisper. “The plan is moving up. Alexander has Leo at the St. Regis penthouse. Arthur is completely neutralized—he’s drunk in some cheap hotel downtown. The boy’s security shifts rotate at 3:00 AM. I want him taken.”
Chloe’s eyes went wide. She scrambled backward on the floor, holding her breath.
“No, I don't care about the risk!” Evelyn snarled into the phone. “If I don't have custody of that boy before the federal grand jury convenes on Thursday, I’m going to prison for twenty years! You take him to the airstrip in New Jersey. My brother has the private jet fueled. Once we are in Brazil, Alexander will have to negotiate. He will give up the stock, the trust, and the criminal charges if he ever wants to see his little brother alive again.”
She hung up the phone and shoved it back into her robe.
She turned around, looking down at Chloe with a cold, dead gaze. “Get up. Pack one bag. Only jewels and cash. If you say a single word to anyone, Chloe, I will tell the police that you were the one who burned him. I’ll tell them it was your idea.”
Chloe stared at her mother, paralyzed by terror. She slowly nodded, scrambling to her feet and running up the stairs toward her bedroom.
Once inside her room, Chloe slammed the door and locked it. Her heart was beating so fast she felt like she was going to throw up. She looked at her bedside table, where a spare, unmonitored iPad lay plugged into the wall.
Her hands shook violently as she unlocked it.
She opened the messaging app.
There was only one person in the world who had the power to stop her mother.
She found the contact card Alexander had given her two years ago before he left for Europe—the one she had never used, the one she had saved under the name *Arrogant Jerk*.
With tears streaming down her face, Chloe typed a message:
*Mom hired men to take Leo from the St. Regis tonight at 3:00 AM. She’s fleeing to Brazil. Please don't let her hurt him. I’m sorry. I’m so sorry.*

She pressed send.
