Chapter 5 - Blood and Vanity

The grand oak-paneled administrative office of St. Matthew’s Preparatory Academy was not accustomed to screaming matches. Headmaster Sterling, a frail man who had managed the elite school for thirty years, stood behind his desk, trembling as Evelyn slammed a legal document down in front of him.

“I am his legal mother!” Evelyn snarled, her voice echoing into the hallway. “This is a signed court order from Judge Miller! You will release Leo Vance into my custody immediately, or I will have your credentials revoked before the end of the day!”

Beside her, two uniformed private security guards and an off-duty city captain stood with their hands resting uncomfortably near their holsters.

Arthur stood a few paces back, his head down, looking like a ghost in his tailored suit. Chloe was leaning against the bookshelf, casually checking her nails, completely disinterested in the screaming match.

Headmaster Sterling adjusted his spectacles, his hands shaking. “Mrs. Vance, we received a directive from Alexander Vance this morning accompanied by a medical affidavit—”

“Alexander Vance has no legal standing!” Evelyn shrieked. “He is an estranged son who was disinherited two years ago! He has no right to make decisions regarding my son!”

The office door clicked open.

Alexander stepped inside. He was flanked by Marcus Vance-Cole and three imposing private security operatives in dark suits with earpieces.

The temperature in the room plummeted.

“Did you say *your* son, Evelyn?” Alexander asked, his voice chillingly calm as he closed the door behind him.

Evelyn whipped around, her eyes flaring with triumphant venom. “Alexander! How convenient! Officer, arrest him! He’s in violation of a standing custody order!”

The city captain took a tentative half-step forward, but Marcus immediately stepped into his path, thrusting a gold-stamped document into his chest.

“I suggest you read this before you take another step, Captain,” Marcus said with razor-sharp authority. “That is a federal stay of execution signed twenty minutes ago by Chief Justice Holloway of the State Supreme Court. It strips Judge Richard Miller of jurisdiction due to an active, ongoing federal investigation into judicial bribery and conflict of interest.”

Evelyn’s breath hitched. “What? That’s... that’s impossible!”

“Is it?” Marcus sneered. “Justice Holloway didn't take kindly to learning that Judge Miller received a three-hundred-thousand-dollar wire transfer from an offshore entity known as Lumina Holdings three days before signing Arthur’s conservatorship expansion.”

Arthur’s head snapped up. He looked at Evelyn, his eyes wide with utter horror. “Lumina? The money from Leo’s trust? You paid Miller?”

Evelyn’s composure finally fractured. “Arthur, shut up! Don't listen to them!”

“Let’s talk about that trust, shall we?” Alexander said, stepping closer to Evelyn until she was forced to take a step back, hitting the edge of the headmaster’s desk. Alexander opened a thick folder and pulled out a stack of eight-by-ten glossy photographs, throwing them across the desk.

They landed face up.

Headmaster Sterling gasped, slapping his hand over his mouth.

The captain of the police backed away, his face turning pale.

The photographs showed Leo’s back. The angry, red, circular cigarette burns. The deep purple contusions along his ribs. The swollen, split lip.

“Take a look, Father,” Alexander commanded, his voice trembling with a terrifying blend of rage and grief. “Look at what your wife calls *discipline*.”

Arthur looked down. He fell to his knees on the carpet, clutching the edge of the desk, letting out a dry, strangled wail that sounded like a dying animal. “No... no, no, God, no... Leo...”

“You did that?” Arthur looked up at Evelyn, tears streaming down his hollow cheeks. “You burned my son?”

“He was lying to me!” Evelyn screamed, her voice turning completely hysterical as the walls closed in on her. “He hid Eleanor’s jewelry! He was trying to ruin me! He deserved it!”

A dead silence descended on the room.

Even Chloe looked up from her phone, her face draining of color. She looked at her mother with sudden, genuine horror.

“Mom...” Chloe whispered, taking a step backward. “You... you said he fell down the stairs.”

“Shut up, Chloe!” Evelyn snapped, her eyes wild, her teeth bared like a rabid wolf. “You don't understand anything! Everything I did, I did to secure our future! Yours and mine! Do you think your father cares about us? The moment that little bastard turns eighteen, Arthur would have given him everything, and we would have been left with scraps!”

“The only thing you’re leaving with, Evelyn,” Alexander said, stepping between her and the door, “is an indictment.”

Marcus turned to the police captain. “Captain, you are currently witnessing a confession of aggravated child abuse and fraud. If you don't arrest Mrs. Vance right this second, you will be named as an accessory after the fact in a federal civil rights lawsuit before noon.”

The captain didn't hesitate. He pulled out a pair of steel handcuffs.

“Evelyn Vance, you have the right to remain silent...”

“Don't touch me!” Evelyn shrieked, thrashing violently as the officer grabbed her wrists. “Arthur! Do something! Arthur! Call Miller! Call our lawyers!”

Arthur didn't move. He remained on his knees, weeping into his hands, completely broken.

As Evelyn was dragged through the administrative hallway, kicking and screaming obscenities, students and teachers gathered by classroom windows, watching the city’s most glamorous socialite being hauled away in steel shackles.

Alexander didn't watch her leave. He walked past the crying Arthur, past the stunned Chloe, and walked straight toward the art classroom at the end of the hall.

Through the glass window of the door, he saw Leo.

The boy was sitting peacefully at an easel, a paintbrush clutched in his small fingers, dabbing bright yellow paint onto a canvas filled with blooming sunflowers, completely oblivious to the fact that the monster who had terrorized his world had just been chained.
