Chapter 3 - The Gathering on the Lawn

Sunday morning broke across central Ohio with a sky the color of wet slate. A freezing mist hung in the air, coating the bare maple trees in thin shells of ice.

Inside 1442 Elmwood Court, excitement was at a fever pitch.

Suitcases were zipped. Winter coats were donned. Teenagers groaned as they were pulled from warm blankets, and small children ran through the hallways clutching travel pillows and handheld gaming consoles.

At 8:45 AM, Evelyn stood on her front porch, wrapped in a plush cream-colored shearling coat, leather gloves fitted snugly over her hands. She held a steaming travel mug of coffee, watching the street with the sharp, anticipatory gaze of an empress waiting for her fleet.

Beside her, Amanda was live-streaming on Instagram, holding her phone high to catch the front of the house and the gathering crowd of cousins behind them.

"Hey guys!" Amanda chirped into her camera, her voice full of curated holiday exuberance. "Big Thanksgiving kickoff today! Twenty-three of us heading to an absolute dream estate in the mountains. Two private charter vans pulling up any minute. Stay tuned for the house tour—you guys are not ready for this kitchen!"

On the lawn, Uncle Frank checked his wristwatch.

8:58 AM.

"Vans running on time, Evelyn?" he asked, stamping his work boots against the cold drive.

"They’re private luxury charters, Frank," Evelyn answered smoothly, not looking at him. "They don't run on public transit schedules. They will be here precisely at nine."

9:00 AM arrived.

The street was silent. A lone postal truck drove past, its tires splashing through a cold puddle at the curb.

9:15 AM.

The wind picked up, sending a biting draft through the driveway. Lily’s older cousin Tyler shoved his hands deep into his pockets, shivering. "Grandma, it’s freezing out here. Can we wait inside?"

"No, Tyler," Evelyn scolded lightly. "The drivers will need to load the luggage immediately upon arrival so we maintain our travel schedule. Just wait a few more minutes."

9:30 AM.

Amanda lowered her phone, her chipper influencer facade cracking. "Mom, did Claire give you the dispatch number for the charter company?"

Evelyn frowned, checking her screen. "She didn't need to give it to me. She booked it. They have this address."

"Well, call her," Amanda muttered, looking around nervously at the relatives who were now shifting uncomfortably, pulling scarves tight over their faces. "Call Claire and find out where they are."

Evelyn sighed dramatically, pulling off one leather glove with her teeth. "Honestly. She can’t even handle a simple transportation arrangement without a delay."

She opened her contacts and tapped **Claire**.

The phone rang.

*Ring.*

*Ring.*

*Ring.*

*“Hi, you’ve reached Claire Vance. Please leave a detailed message and I will return your call when it is convenient. Have a wonderful day.”*

*Beep.*

Evelyn hung up without leaving a message. "Went straight to voicemail. She’s probably driving behind the vans."

"Try the company directly," Uncle Frank suggested, his tone dry and devoid of patience. "What was the name of the charter?"

"Buckeye... Buckeye Executive Charter, I think," Amanda offered, pulling up her search browser. "Here it is. Give me the phone."

Amanda dialed the number on speaker. After three rings, a professional dispatcher answered: *"Buckeye Executive Transportation, this is Keith."*

"Hi, Keith," Amanda said, projecting authority. "We have two Mercedes Sprinter vans booked for pickup at 1442 Elmwood Court in Dublin for nine o'clock. It’s now nine-thirty-five. Where are your drivers?"

There was a typing pause on the other end of the line.

*"Name on the reservation, ma'am?"*

"Evelyn Vance. Or Claire Vance."

More typing. The keyboard clicks seemed impossibly loud against the cold Ohio silence.

*"Ah, yes. Reservation number BXT-4091. Two fourteen-passenger executive Sprinters."*

"Yes, exactly," Amanda said, shooting a triumphant look at Frank. "Where are they?"

*"Ma'am, that reservation was cancelled Friday night at eleven-forty-two PM."*

Amanda’s face froze. The triumphant smirk dissolved into slack-jawed incomprehension. "What? Cancelled? What do you mean cancelled? That’s impossible. We’re standing on the lawn right now with twenty-three people!"

*"I'm looking right at the transaction log, ma'am,"* Keith replied, his voice flat and entirely unbothered by her panic. *"The reservation was cancelled online through the primary account portal by the cardholder, Claire Vance. The cancellation was confirmed, and the full deposit was reversed to her credit card. We have no vehicles dispatched to your location."*

"Wait! No! You don't understand—"

*"Is there anything else I can help you with today?"*

"We need those vans! Can you send them right now?"

*"Ma'am, it’s the Sunday before Thanksgiving. Every single vehicle in our fleet has been booked for six months. We have nothing available until next Tuesday. Have a good day."*

The line went dead.

The click of the disconnected call resonated like a gunshot in the frozen morning air.

Amanda stared at her screen, her mouth opening and closing like a landed fish.

"What did he say?" Evelyn demanded, stepping down from the porch, her shearling coat swinging open. "Amanda! What did he say?!"

"She... she cancelled them," Amanda whispered.

"What do you mean she cancelled them?!" Evelyn’s voice shrilled, cracking on the cold air.

Uncle Frank took a step forward, his eyes narrowing into cold slits. "Amanda. Did Claire cancel the vans, or did the company make a mistake?"

"He said... he said Claire cancelled them online Friday night," Amanda stammered, looking at her mother with wide, horrified eyes. "Right after she left here."

A collective murmur erupted through the gathered relatives. Aunt Beatrice didn’t say a word. She simply folded her arms across her chest, watching her sister with an expression of ruthless, unflinching assessment.

"Give me that phone!" Evelyn snatched Amanda’s iPhone from her hand and jabbed her thumb against Claire’s contact card.

*Ring.*

*Ring.*

*Voicemail.*

Evelyn hung up and dialed again.

*Ring.*

*Ring.*

*Voicemail.*

"Claire!" Evelyn screamed into the third voicemail, her composure completely disintegrating on the front sidewalk for all the neighbors to hear. "Claire Vance, pick up this telephone this instant! What have you done?! Where are the vans?! People are standing on my lawn in the freezing cold! Call me back immediately!"

"Mom," Greg said, his face pale as he looked up from his own phone. He had gone directly to the luxury lodge’s management website to find the direct office number. "Mom, call Whispering Pines."

"What?" Evelyn whipped around, her eyes wild.

May you like

"Call the lodge," Greg repeated, his voice dropping into a register of sheer dread. "Call them right now."
