Chapter 6 - The Liquidation of Vanessa Cole

The corporate headquarters of Holloway Logistics International on the forty-second floor of the World Financial Center smelled of panic, burnt paper, and high-gloss toner running hot.

It was 4:30 PM on Thursday.

The executive corridors were deserted, save for two private security officers from Sterling Asset Protection who stood guard outside the glass doors of the Department of Global Communications.

Inside the corner office overlooking the Statue of Liberty, Vanessa Cole was furiously stuffing designer leather handbags, personal journals, and three boxes of expensive stationery into an oversized Louis Vuitton duffel bag.

Her hands were shaking so violently that she dropped a heavy silver paperweight, sending it crashing through the glass top of her Italian coffee table:

CRACK.

"Damn it!" she sobbed, dropping to her knees on the plush wool carpet, frantically clawing through the drawers of her mahogany credenza for her personal corporate credit cards.

The heavy double doors of the suite clicked open.

Walking across the carpet was Rachel Vance, dressed in a sharp charcoal trouser suit, accompanied by Elena Rostova—the Corporate Compliance Director who had recorded Grant's video meeting forty-eight hours earlier—and two uniformed investigators from the Securities and Exchange Commission.

Vanessa scrambled to her feet, clutching her designer bag against her chest like a shield, her face streaked with black mascara trails.

"This is my private office!" Vanessa shrieked, backing away toward the panoramic window. "You have no right to enter this suite without an administrative order from Grant!"

Elena Rostova adjusted her silver-rimmed reading glasses, pulling a certified document from her leather portfolio:

HOLLOWAY LOGISTICS INTERNATIONAL – BOARD RESOLUTION #26-088

ACTION: IMMEDIATE TERMINATION OF SENIOR COMMUNICATIONS DIRECTOR

EMPLOYEE: VANESSA MARIE COLE – ID #88412

REASON: GROSS MISCONDUCT; EMBEZZLEMENT OF CORPORATE EXPENSE ESCROWS;

UNAUTHORIZED DISCLOSURE OF INSIDE FINANCIAL ACQUISITION COVENANTS.

"Signed ninety minutes ago by the Independent Governance Committee, Miss Cole," Elena Rostova said, her voice flat, dry, and cold as a winter morning in Moscow.

"Furthermore, forensic auditors have completed an audit of your corporate travel accounts for the last twenty-four months.

You billed one hundred and forty-two thousand dollars in personal luxury hotel stays at the Baccarat, the Carlyle, and the Little Nell in Aspen to the 'Public Infrastructure Outreach' fund."

Vanessa’s knees visibly buckled. She caught herself against the window frame, her breath coming in ragged, shallow gasps. "Grant approved those expenses! Grant signed every single voucher!"

"Grant Holloway was removed from the Chief Executive position by the board thirty minutes ago, Vanessa," Rachel said, stepping forward, her hazel eyes cutting through the younger woman like a straight razor.

"And under the terms of the federal receivership order...

every single gift, vehicle, and residential lease acquired with corporate funds...

is subject to immediate civil forfeiture."

Rachel pointed a finger at the diamond-encrusted Cartier Love bracelet on Vanessa’s wrist—the one Grant had purchased on Fifth Avenue three weeks after I was hospitalized for pre-term contractions.

"Take it off, Vanessa," Rachel said softly.

"What?" Vanessa choked out.

"Take it off," Rachel repeated, her voice dropping into that chilling, quiet register that brook zero argument.

"The screwdriver is in the evidence kit on that desk.

You have five minutes to unbolt that gold from your arm...

or the SEC marshals standing behind me...

will unbolt it in a holding cell at the Metropolitan Correctional Center."

Vanessa let out a raw, broken wail of pure, unadulterated humiliation.

She dropped onto the edge of her leather chair, her fingers trembling violently as she picked up the small gold screwdriver, her tears splashing down onto the desk blotter as she slowly, agonizingly backed the tiny screws out of the bracelet that had defined her social vanity.

CLINK.

The gold bands hit the mahogany wood with a sharp, hollow sound that signaled the total, permanent collapse of her three-year campaign to replace me.

Rachel scooped the bracelet into an airtight plastic evidence bag, zipped it shut, and turned toward the door.

"The building concierge has your personal coat in the lobby, Vanessa," Rachel said over her shoulder.

"The service elevators are waiting.

Don't look back."
