Chapter 8 - The Scramble and the Unraveling

"Get the press out!" Edmund Sr. roared, his voice cracking with fury and sudden, terrifying panic. "Harrison! Clear the media! Turn off the damn cameras!"
It was too late.
The two camera operators hired by the Hargrove Group to livestream the ceremony to their international offices in London and Singapore were frozen, their red recording lights glowing steadily. In the back rows, three different society reporters were already frantically typing on their iPhones, sending urgent updates to every major news outlet in the state.

Paige was weeping now, ugly, guttural sobs that smeared her mascara across her foundation. "Edmund, please! You know how much I love this family! I did it for Eddie! Eddie was stressed, he was so worried about not giving you a grandson—"
"Shut up," Eddie whispered.
He was still on his knees on the white carpet. He slowly raised his head, his face ashen, looking at Paige not with anger, but with an absolute, sickening horror.
"You knew," Eddie said, his voice barely audible, yet cutting through her weeping like a wire. "You let me sign those divorce papers. You let me throw Caroline out of our house."
"Eddie, she didn't love you like I do!" Paige cried, reaching for his hand, but Eddie jerked away as if she were a venomous snake.
"Don't touch me," he snarled, rising to his feet with an uncharacteristic, violent grace. "Don't you dare touch me."
Edmund Sr. reached the communion table with uneven, heavy steps. His hands were shaking violently as he tore open the wax seal on Caroline’s envelope. He pulled out the documents.
His eyes scanned the Johns Hopkins seal.
Then the Dallas genetic lab report.
Then the bank transfers from Paige’s private account to Tyler Briggs.
The paper fluttered in his fingers. The color was leaving Edmund Sr.’s face at an alarming rate, turning his weathered skin a dull, chalky gray. His left arm began to twitch, the silver-topped cane slipping from his grip and clattering across the marble floor with a sound like a pistol shot.
"Edmund?" Harrison Polk rushed forward, catching the patriarch by his elbow. "Edmund, sit down. Take a breath. Someone get Dr. Keller!"
"Twelve... twelve million," Edmund Sr. wheezed, his chest heaving, his eyes fixed on Caroline. "You... you knew."
"I knew," Caroline said, standing tall, holding her son securely against her ribs. "I knew that your pride was so vast, your obsession with bloodlines so blind, that you would buy a counterfeit coin rather than treat a human being with decency. You wanted an heir, Edmund. You wanted a male name to engrave on your empire."
She took one step closer, her voice dropping into a tone of quiet, absolute judgment.
"Here is your grandson," she said, gesturing to Noah. "And you will never, as long as you draw breath, have the right to claim him."
Edmund Sr. let out a choked gasp, his hand clutching at his chest, his knees buckling under him. Harrison and two security guards caught him before he hit the ground, lowering him onto the velvet cushions of the front pew as chaos erupted across the ballroom.
Guests were standing on chairs. Women were screaming. Someone was shouting for a defibrillator.
Caroline didn't wait for the paramedics.
She turned on her heel, her emerald silk dress swirling around her ankles, and began walking back down the long, flower-strewn aisle toward the heavy exit doors.
"Caroline!"
Eddie’s voice rang out above the roar of the panicking crowd.
He was running down the aisle after her, his bowtie undone, his tuxedo jacket flapping open, abandoning his father, abandoning his weeping bride, abandoning the five hundred titans of industry who were watching the collapse of the Hargrove dynasty in real time.
"Caroline, wait! Please!"
May you like
She didn't stop. She pushed through the mahogany doors into the bright, blinding sunshine of the Texas afternoon.
