Chapter 5 - The Castle Walls

Back at the estate outside Harrisburg, the late afternoon sun was beginning to dip below the frozen ridge of the Blue Mountain. Long, amber shadows stretched across the snow-dusted lawn, illuminating the grand stone facade of my father’s house.

The house was finally quiet.

Arthur Vance sat at the kitchen island, a porcelain cup of black coffee steaming in his hands. Across the room, a registered nurse named Sarah, whom Arthur had hired from a premier private agency in Philadelphia, was upstairs in the nursery, settling Harper into her crib after a full feeding.

I walked into the kitchen, moving slowly, one hand supporting my lower abdomen. The throbbing pain from my surgical incision had returned with a vengeance, but for the first time in nine months, the suffocating, crushing anxiety that had lived in my chest was gone.

"You should be lying down, Elena," Arthur said gently, looking up from his coffee. "You’ve been through a physical and emotional trauma today that would break most grown men."

"I spent seven years believing I was married to a good man, Uncle Arthur," I said, leaning against the marble counter. "A few hours of standing up isn't going to break me."

Arthur set his cup down and looked at me with deep, solemn affection. "Your father would be immensely proud of you today, Elena. When Thomas knew his heart was failing, he called me into his study. He told me, *'Arthur, my daughter has an enormous heart. She loves deeply, and sometimes people who love deeply can be blind to the wolves at the door. Promise me you will build a wall around her that no wolf can ever climb.'*"

Tears welled in my eyes. "He knew Christopher was a wolf?"

"He didn't know Christopher specifically," Arthur replied. "He just knew human nature. He knew that immense generational wealth attracts predators the way spilled sugar attracts ants. That’s why we structured the trust the way we did. Christopher could have lived here in luxury for the rest of his life, loved you, raised Harper, and enjoyed every comfort my brother created. But his greed was an insatiable monster. He didn't want to share paradise; he wanted to conquer it."

The kitchen phone on the wall remained silent, but my personal smartphone buzzed on the counter. I looked down at the screen.

It was an incoming call from the Dauphin County Prison.

I stared at the glowing screen for several seconds. Arthur watched me quietly, offering no advice, letting me make the choice.

I picked up the phone and swiped to answer. I pressed the speaker button.

*"You have a collect call from an inmate at the Dauphin County Prison:* ***Christopher Hayes***. *Press one to accept charges."*

I pressed one.

Immediately, a desperate, frantic voice tumbled through the speaker, breathless and cracked with tears.

"Elena? Elena, oh God, thank God you picked up! Elena, please, you have to listen to me!" Christopher was sobbing so hard he could barely form words. The background noise was filled with the clanging of metal cell doors and the echoing shouts of correctional officers. "Elena, they put me in general intake! They took my clothes, they took everything! It’s freezing here, Elena! There are dangerous men in this block! You have to post my bail!"

I remained completely silent, listening to the man who had looked at me three hours ago and handed me two hundred dollars.

"Elena? Are you there? Baby, please talk to me!" Christopher begged, his voice rising in panic. "The magistrate set my bail at five hundred thousand dollars cash! My business accounts are frozen! They took my mother's car! Chloe isn't answering her phone! Elena, call your Uncle Arthur! Tell him to withdraw the criminal complaint! Tell the district attorney this was an internal family financial dispute! If you do that, the charges will be dropped! We can fix this, Elena! We can go to counseling! I swear on Harper's life, I will never touch a financial document again!"

"You swore on Harper's life?" I finally spoke, my voice low, clear, and utterly devoid of warmth.

The line went dead quiet for a second before Christopher gasped. "Yes! Yes, baby! I swear on our daughter's life! I love you both more than anything in this world!"

"Three hours ago, Christopher," I said, each word dripping like ice water, "you looked at Harper sleeping on my chest and told your mother that a newborn doesn't need luxury, and neither did I. You handed me two hundred dollars and told me to catch a bus to Scranton."

"I was desperate, Elena!" he cried out, his voice cracking into high-pitched hysteria. "The loan sharks were threatening to break my legs! I wasn't thinking straight! Brenda was in my ear every day telling me you looked down on me! She poisoned my mind, Elena! It was all Brenda's fault!"

"It wasn't Brenda who forged my signature in that hospital room, Christopher," I said. "It wasn't Brenda who slept with Chloe Jenkins in hotel rooms in Hershey while I was vomiting blood from morning sickness."

The silence on the other end of the line was absolute. Christopher’s breath hitched violently.

"You... you knew about Chloe?" he whispered, his voice trembling with newfound horror.

"I have known about Chloe for four months," I replied. "I knew about the hotel bookings. I knew about the jewelry you bought her with my father’s dividend disbursements. I knew about the flight to Miami you two booked for four-thirty this afternoon."

"Elena..."

"Chloe is currently in federal custody at Philadelphia International Airport, Christopher," I continued relentlessly. "She has already offered to hand over your encrypted hard drives and testify against you in exchange for a plea deal with the U.S. Attorney. By tomorrow morning, you won't just be facing state charges in Dauphin County. You will be facing federal wire fraud and money laundering indictments."

"No... no, no, no! Chloe wouldn't do that! She loved me!" Christopher wailed, sounding completely unhinged.

"Chloe loved your access to my father's money, Christopher. Just like you did." I took a deep, steady breath, feeling the strength surging back into my veins. "Tomorrow morning, Uncle Arthur will file emergency divorce papers on the grounds of adultery, financial abandonment, and criminal felony conduct. We are requesting sole legal and physical custody of Harper, with a permanent protection from abuse order. You will never see her again. You will never set foot on this property again."

"Elena! Don't do this to me! I'm your husband! You can't leave me to rot in prison!"

"Here is my final piece of advice, Christopher," I whispered into the phone. "Remember those two hundred-dollar bills you left on the dining table? I had Uncle Arthur deposit them into your inmate commissary account. Use them to buy yourself some cheap warm socks and instant soup on the outskirts of society. And don't make a scene."

I tapped the red end-call button.

The line went dead.

May you like

I set the phone face-down on the counter. For the first time in what felt like an eternity, the air in the house smelled sweet, clean, and entirely mine.
