Chapter 5 - Whispers in the Ledger

By Monday morning, the fallout from the cathedral had turned into a five-alarm blaze.
Kyle’s GoFundMe campaign was suspended by the platform pending a fraud investigation after Elena submitted the court filings showing Aaron’s existing insurance policies and the fraudulent nature of the family's claims. Donors were demanding refunds in the comments section; Aaron’s law firm had issued a terse, sterile press release stating that Aaron Callaway’s partnership status had been posthumously dissolved and that an internal audit of his trust accounts was underway.
In Elena’s conference room, Marcus Reed had laid out eight distinct color-coded charts across the glass table.
"It gets darker, Clara," Marcus said, rubbing the bridge of his nose where his glasses had left deep red indents. He had clearly spent the entire weekend inside the banking records.
"Tell me," I said, leaning forward.
"The three hundred and twenty thousand dollars from your home equity wasn't the only money that went missing," Marcus said, sliding a ledger toward me. "Aaron had been borrowing money from private hard-money lenders for the last nine months. He used his projected partnership distribution as collateral. But he wasn't spending it on the condo."
I frowned, looking at the columns of numbers. "Where was it going?"
"Kyle," Elena said, interjecting with a grim look. "Kyle runs a boutique sports marketing agency downtown. Or rather, he *pretends* to run one. In reality, Kyle has been running an offshore sports betting account through an intermediary in Costa Rica. He was down nearly four hundred thousand dollars by the end of last summer."
The room seemed to shrink.
"Aaron was paying off Kyle’s bookmakers?" I asked.
"Aaron was keeping Kyle out of federal prison," Marcus corrected. "The transfers were masked as 'consulting fees' paid by Aurora Holdings to Kyle’s shell company. But that’s only half the story. Denise was receiving a monthly stipend of thirty-five hundred dollars from the same account. Do you know what the line item was called in Aaron’s personal quickbooks?"
"What?"
"*Mother’s Silence.*"
The words hung in the air like poison.
"She wasn't just supporting his affair," Elena said, her voice filled with deep disgust. "She was shaking him down. Denise knew Aaron couldn't afford a scandal. His firm was on the verge of electing him managing partner, and the firm's morals clause was ironclad: any public scandal, divorce, or financial impropriety resulted in immediate forfeiture of his equity stake. Denise knew that. So she made Aaron pay for her lifestyle, pay Kyle’s debts, and buy Celeste’s loyalty to keep the whole house of cards from collapsing."
I stared at the ledger.
Every holiday dinner, every birthday gathering, every summer vacation where Denise had looked at me with thin-lipped pity while demanding Aaron take care of his 'fragile' family—it had all been an extortion racket. Aaron hadn't been an untouchable corporate titan; he had been a frantic, desperate rat running inside a wheel he couldn't stop, feeding an insatiable mother and a degenerate brother while trying to play the romantic savior to an ambitious mistress.
"And then his heart gave out," I whispered.
"Not quite on its own," Marcus said quietly.
He pulled a single-page document from a red folder and placed it before me. It was marked *Confidential: Office of the Chief Medical Examiner - Preliminary Toxicology Report.*
I looked up at Marcus, my throat dry. "What is this?"
"Marisol Vega, the nurse from Riverside Memorial, flagged something in Aaron’s admission labs that didn't make sense for a healthy forty-one-year-old runner," Elena explained. "She tipped off the medical examiner’s investigator before the body could be released to St. Jude’s."
"Aaron’s blood was saturated with high doses of an unapproved peptide compound and an unregulated black-market stimulant often sold under the street name *Viper*," Marcus said. "It’s an aggressive performance enhancer used by bodybuilders to cut fat quickly while sustaining extreme cardiovascular output. Combined with a massive dose of sildenafil—Viagra—his blood pressure spiked into the two-forties within minutes. His aorta didn't just fail; it tore."
The image of Aaron, running five miles every morning, obsessing over clean eating, lecturing me about saturated fats while secretly injecting dangerous chemical cocktails in Celeste’s apartment to maintain the illusion of youth and sexual stamina, was sickening.
"Where did he get it?" I asked.
"The police are looking into that right now," Elena said. "Because according to text messages recovered from Aaron’s cloud backups by the forensic tech this morning, the person who supplied him with the peptide vials was Celeste Harper’s personal trainer—a man named Viktor Vance, who also happens to be Celeste’s former fiancé."
I pressed my fingers against my temples. The room felt like it was tilting.
"She was sleeping with Aaron, bleeding his money into a luxury condo, while her ex-fiancé was supplying him with the illegal stimulants that blew his heart apart?"
"And who do you think was standing to inherit the condo once Aaron signed the transfer?" Elena asked, leaning across the table. "Celeste didn't just want an affair, Clara. She wanted a 1.4-million-dollar asset free and clear. Aaron was running out of money. The hard-money lenders were calling him. Kyle’s debts were piling up. Aaron was about to crash, and Celeste knew it. If he died *before* the fraud was discovered, she walked away with the real estate."
"Except he didn't sign the transfer in time," I said.
"He didn't sign it," Elena confirmed with a cold, triumphant smile. "Which means that title is void ab initio. The condo belongs entirely to Aaron’s estate. Which means, Clara... it belongs to you."
Before I could respond, Elena’s desk phone buzzed. Her assistant’s voice came over the intercom:
*"Elena, there’s a Frank Callaway in the lobby. He’s alone. He says if he doesn't speak to Clara in the next ten minutes, he’s going straight to the police station."*
Elena and I exchanged a sharp look.

"Send him in," Elena said.
