Chapter 5 - The Crack in the Veneer

The exhibition hall cleared out rapidly after the semi-finals concluded, leaving a cavernous silence in its wake. In the corridor outside the restrooms, the tension that had been brewing all day finally detonated.

"You embarrassed us, Mason!" Vanessa’s voice bounced off the polished tile walls, shrill and venomous. "Do you have any idea how much money we spent on that project? The drone kit alone cost fourteen thousand dollars! And you couldn't even keep the power running for twenty minutes!"

Mason stood against the concrete wall, his head down, tears quietly running down his cheeks. "The software wasn't designed for that surge, Mom. Dr. Vance warned us earlier about the vendor libraries—"

"I don't care what that old fossil said!" Vanessa snarled, her manicured hands waving wildly. "You should have found a way! You were supposed to win this championship! What am I going to tell the country club committee on Monday? That my son lost to two gutter rats using discarded junk?"

"Shut up, Vanessa."

The words were spoken quietly, but they carried enough weight to stop Vanessa dead in her tracks.

She turned to Daniel, her eyes blazing. "What did you say to me?"

Daniel’s face was gray, his eyes hollowed out with exhaustion and disgust. "I said shut up. Stop yelling at him."

"How dare you take that tone with me?" Vanessa stepped right into his face. "If it weren't for my family's connections, you wouldn't even be a junior partner at your firm! You owe everything to my father!"

"And look what it cost me," Daniel whispered, his voice trembling with a mixture of rage and profound regret. "Look what I gave up to sit in your father's shadow."

"What are you talking about?" Vanessa demanded.

"Those boys," Daniel said, pointing toward the main arena doors. "Those 'gutter rats.' They're my sons, Vanessa. My flesh and blood."

Vanessa froze. A slow, ugly sneer spread across her red-painted lips. "Oh. So that's what this is. The pathetic little secret you left behind in that suburban tract house. You think they're better than Mason? Look at them! They're nobody! They have no pedigree, no future, no money!"

"They don't need money," Mason interrupted, his voice shaking but clear.

Vanessa whirled on him. "Mason, be quiet!"

"No, Mom," Mason said, wiping his face with the sleeve of his expensive blazer. "They don't need money because they actually know what they're doing. I didn't build that drone. Your tutors built it. I just memorized the slides. Those guys... they built that system with their bare hands. They're real engineers. I'm just a prop for your social media posts."

Mason threw his leather binder onto the floor, the papers scattering across the tiles, and turned to walk away.

"Mason! Come back here right now!" Vanessa screamed, her voice echoing down the corridor.

Mason didn't look back. He rounded the corner and disappeared toward the central fountain.

Daniel stood motionless, watching his son walk away, before turning back to Vanessa. For the first time in thirteen years, he saw her clearly: stripped of her wealth, her jewelry, and her pristine social standing, she was nothing more than a hollow, cruel narcissist. And he had traded the greatest treasures of his life just to stand beside her.
