Chapter 4 - The Whispers Turn Cold

"Amanda, give me the phone back," Derek snapped, his voice slightly slurred from his fourth glass of Macallan. He reached across the table, trying to snatch his device from Amanda Pierce's hand.
Amanda pulled it out of his reach, her face pale under the amber candlelight. "Derek, look at the chat. Marcus Hale just logged on."
Melissa froze, her fork halfway to her mouth. "What? Marcus never checks the Slack channel on weekends."
"Well, he’s on now," Amanda hissed, her fingers scrolling rapidly through the internal messages. "Someone forwarded the video to his executive assistant. Marcus just posted: *'Whose table is this, and why is our firm's name associated with this behavior?'* Derek, this is getting completely out of hand. If he traces this back to your corporate account—"
"Shut up, Amanda," Derek hissed, snatching the phone from her grip. "Marcus is seventy-four years old. He doesn't know how Slack works. I’ll tell him Ethan’s account was hacked, or that Ethan posted it himself as a joke. Stop being such a coward."
Derek turned his gaze back toward table seventeen, expecting to see Ethan preparing to make his exit. He expected to see the woman slumped over in tears, or better yet, Ethan walking away while she scrambled to flag down the waiter with an empty wallet.
Instead, Ethan Brooks was standing up.
He didn't look defeated. He didn't look embarrassed. He looked massive, his tall frame cutting through the dim restaurant lighting like the prow of an icebreaker. He offered his hand to Olivia Carter.
To Derek’s utter bewilderment, Olivia took it. She stood with a graceful, unhurried poise, her navy dress falling perfectly around her curves, her head held high. There was no hesitation in her step, no shame in her posture.
"Look at him," Melissa sneered, though there was a tremor of uncertainty in her voice. "He’s actually walking her to the coat check. What a pathetic Boy Scout."
"Wait," Amanda whispered, her eyes widening in horror. "They’re not going to the coat check."
Ethan and Olivia were walking directly toward table nine.
The music from the piano seemed to fade into background static as Ethan stopped at the edge of their table. The waiter, sensing the sudden drop in atmospheric pressure, quickly steered his serving cart toward the opposite side of the room.
Derek leaned back, plastering a wide, greasy grin across his face. "Hey! Ethan, buddy! We were just... we were just wondering how the date was going. We didn't expect you to stay for dinner."
Melissa chimed in, her voice dripping with artificial sweetness. "Yes, Ethan! You should have introduced us earlier! Is this your lovely friend?"
Ethan didn't speak. He simply stood there, his shadow falling across Derek’s plate, his eyes completely dead of any warmth.
The silence stretched for five unbearable seconds.
Melissa’s smile began to falter. She tucked a strand of blonde hair behind her ear, her laugh turning nervous and shrill. "What's with the serious face, Ethan? It’s Friday night. We were just having a little fun."
"A little fun," Olivia repeated.
Her voice wasn't loud, but it possessed a strange, resonant clarity that cut through the entire corner of the dining room. Several patrons at nearby tables turned to look.
"You thought it was fun, Melissa, to create a burner account on an academic forum to lure a stranger downtown?" Olivia asked, stepping slightly forward. "You thought it was fun to broadcast a woman’s physical appearance to your firm’s entire junior staff so you could feel superior for forty-five minutes?"
Derek let out a sharp, defensive bark of laughter. "Whoa, lady, calm down. It was an office gag. If you can’t take a joke, maybe you shouldn't be on dating apps."
"It wasn't a joke, Derek," Ethan said, his voice dropping into a dangerous, subterranean growl. "It was a breach of corporate conduct, common decency, and basic human dignity. But that’s not why we came over here."
Derek sneered, leaning forward, his drunken arrogance overriding his survival instinct. "Oh, really? Why did you come over, Ethan? You going to punch me in the middle of Lumina? Go ahead. See what my uncle says to the board on Monday morning. You'll be drafting fire escapes in Peoria by Friday."
Olivia set her gray tablet gently on the center of their table, right between Derek’s half-empty scotch and Melissa’s dessert plate.
"Your uncle won't be saying anything to the board on Monday, Derek," Olivia said smoothly.
She reached out and tapped the spacebar.
The screen illuminated. Displayed in high-definition clarity was a PDF document bearing the official seal of the United States District Court for the Northern District of Illinois. Beneath it was a detailed bank transfer ledger showing twelve wire transactions totaling $22,418,000 from the Brooks & Hale municipal escrow account into an entity named *Apex Procurement Systems LLC.*
And listed as the sole managing director of Apex Procurement Systems was Derek Lawson.
The color drained from Derek’s face so fast it looked as though someone had pulled a plug at the base of his skull. The smirk vanished, replaced by an expression of raw, paralyzing terror.
"What... what is that?" Derek stammered, his fingers trembling as he reached for the tablet.
"Don't touch it," Ethan snapped, stepping in, his voice cracking like a whip. "If you touch that screen, Derek, I will break your fingers where you sit."
Melissa stared at the screen, her eyes darting across the numbers. Her breath caught in her throat. "Derek... what is that? Why is my personal email listed under the shell account communications?"
Olivia looked down at Melissa with an expression of profound, devastating pity. "Because Derek used you, Melissa. While you were busy feeling powerful by mocking women on the internet, Derek set up your corporate email address as the secondary contact on the fraudulent procurement invoices for the Gary, Indiana scrap metal shipments. If this hit federal court without an audit, you would have served eight years as his co-conspirator while he claimed he was misled by his staff."
Melissa turned her head toward Derek, her face twisting into a mask of pure horror. "You... you told me those invoices were for marketing retainers! You said you were helping me get my junior partner bonus!"
"Shut up, Melissa!" Derek hissed, jumping to his feet, knocking his chair backward onto the hardwood floor with a deafening crash.
The entire restaurant went dead silent. The pianist stopped playing.
Derek stood there, sweating profusely, his chest heaving, trapped between the towering figure of Ethan Brooks and the cold, unyielding gaze of the woman he had spent the evening mocking.
"Who the hell are you?" Derek whispered, his voice trembling violently.
Olivia looked at her watch. The hands clicked to precisely ten-forty-five PM.
May you like
"My name is Olivia Carter," she said clearly, loud enough for every waiter, patron, and manager in the room to hear. "I am the Lead Special Forensic Investigator for the Illinois State Auditor General. And before midnight, Derek, you are going to tell us everything."
