Chapter 5 - The Counterstrike

While the ambulance was quietly dispatched to the private gates of High Ridge, the digital war in Manhattan reached its boiling point.
Vanessa Cole’s tearful interview had dominated the morning news cycle, briefly giving Grayson’s dwindling circle of defenders something to cling to. Social media commentators who thrived on contrarian takes were already churning out articles questioning whether Evelyn had orchestrated the gala scene to seize control of Whitmore Holdings.
*“Did the Heiress Set Up the Mistress?”* screamed a headline on a prominent digital tabloid. *“Insiders claim Evelyn Vale planned the wine spill to trigger an obscure post-nup clause!”*
Inside his Park Avenue office, Richard Vale watched the media circus unfold on three monitors. He sat behind his desk with his coat off, his shirtsleeves rolled up, exuding an aura of absolute, lethal focus.
His phone buzzed. It was Marcus.
“Talk to me, Marcus,” Richard commanded.
“Evelyn has been admitted to Greenwich Hospital, private wing,” Marcus reported, his voice tense. “She’s in early pre-term labor at thirty-four weeks. Dr. Henderson is administering magnesium sulfate to stop the contractions and steroids for the baby’s lung development. She is stabilized for the moment, but the doctor says the next forty-eight hours are critical. Any further stress could trigger active delivery.”
Richard closed his eyes for two seconds. When he opened them, the last shred of mercy had vanished from his gaze.
“Who is currently managing Vanessa Cole’s PR?” Richard asked.
“A boutique firm called Apex Media, funded on an emergency retainer by Claudia Whitmore’s personal account,” Marcus answered. “They’re pushing the narrative that Evelyn provoked the confrontation and that Grayson is an innocent victim of a coordinated corporate raid.”
“Release the archive,” Richard said simply.
“All of it, sir?”
“Every single byte,” Richard replied. “Let the public see what my daughter endured while that coward played the victim.”
Ten minutes later, Vale Capital’s communications team did not issue a statement. They did not tweet. Instead, they launched a dedicated, un-paywalled digital archive titled simply: *The Record: Whitmore Holdings & The Facts.*
It was a masterclass in forensic destruction.
The website contained no commentary, no emotional appeals, and no spin. It contained only primary source documents, meticulously verified by digital forensic experts and certified under penalty of perjury.
First was the unedited, crystal-clear 4K video of the gala, taken from an aerial camera installed by the venue’s lighting crew. In high definition, there was no ambiguity. Viewers could clearly see Vanessa Cole deliberately step forward, make eye contact with Evelyn, smile, and deliberately invert her glass directly over Evelyn’s pregnant abdomen. There was no bump. There was no push. It was an act of pure, calculated malice.
Second was the complete, unredacted twenty-minute audio file from the pearl clutch, beginning five minutes before the spill and running until Evelyn entered the elevator. Grayson’s exact words were captioned on screen: *“Go upstairs and clean yourself up before you make this scene any worse.”* Followed by his refusal to ask if his wife was hurt, and his physical shielding of Vanessa.
Third was the financial documentation: forty-two receipts from luxury hotels across North America and Europe spanning eighteen months, cross-referenced with Whitmore Holdings corporate card expenditures and flight manifests.
And finally, the devastating blow: high-resolution photographs of the custom Cartier drop earrings taken during Evelyn and Grayson’s Paris anniversary, complete with the jeweler’s original certificate of authenticity and insurance appraisal listing Evelyn Vale as the sole owner—juxtaposed directly against paparazzi photos of Vanessa Cole wearing the exact same earrings at a fashion show forty-eight hours before the gala.
The internet did not merely react; it detonated.
Within thirty minutes, the traffic crashed the servers hosting Apex Media’s website. Vanessa Cole’s social media accounts were flooded with over half a million comments demanding she be prosecuted for theft and fraud.
Major retail brands that had sponsored Vanessa rushed to issue public statements disavowing her entirely. By 3:00 PM, the Manhattan District Attorney’s office issued a brief, chilling press release: *“The Financial Frauds Bureau has initiated a formal inquiry into allegations of corporate embezzlement and fraudulent asset transfer involving Whitmore Holdings and Horizon Luxe Media.”*
Vanessa Cole was no longer a tragic victim; she was a woman facing grand larceny and tax evasion charges.
Meanwhile, Grayson Whitmore had seen the archive.
He sat on the floor of his mother’s library, surrounded by empty tumblers of scotch, watching the comments roll across his laptop screen. His name was being dragged through every gutter in the English-speaking world. His friends had blocked his number. His board had abandoned him. His mistress had fled to an undisclosed location to avoid process servers.
And then, his phone rang. It was an unknown local number from Greenwich.
Grayson scrambled across the floor, snatching the phone, his heart hammering in his throat. “Evelyn? Evelyn, please—”
“Mr. Whitmore,” a cool, clinical female voice said. “This is the administrative desk at Greenwich Hospital Maternity Pavilion. We are calling to inform you, pursuant to state reporting guidelines, that Evelyn Vale-Whitmore has been admitted under emergency obstetric protocol.”
Grayson’s breath hitched. “Is she having the baby? Is it Clara?”
“The patient is currently in stable condition, but is undergoing pre-term labor intervention. However, you are advised that an active protection order is registered with hospital security. You are barred from the premises. Any attempt to enter the facility will result in immediate arrest.”
The line went dead.
Grayson stared at the phone. The fog of alcohol and self-pity suddenly burned away, replaced by an irrational, frantic desperation.
*Clara.*
If Evelyn had the baby now, she would sign the birth certificate alone. She would give the child her maiden name. She would lock him out forever. If he wasn’t there, if he couldn't establish paternity and demand his rights in person, he would lose his last remaining tether to the Vale empire, his last leverage against total financial ruin.
“I have to go,” Grayson muttered to himself, stumbling to his feet.
Claudia entered the room, looking haggard. “Grayson, where are you going? The reporters are camped outside the lobby!”
“She’s in the hospital,” Grayson said wildly, grabbing his car keys from the console. “She’s having my daughter! They can’t keep a father away from his child’s birth! No court in the world would uphold that!”
“Grayson, there’s a restraining order!” Claudia screamed, running after him. “The police will arrest you!”
“Let them try!” Grayson yelled back, slamming the front door behind him. “That baby is my daughter! She’s a Whitmore! They cannot erase me!”

He bypassed the underground garage elevators, took the service stairs, and threw himself into his sports car, speeding out into the Manhattan evening traffic, heading north toward Connecticut like a man driving straight into an abyss.
