Chapter 9 - The Price of Silence

"Mrs. Vance," Arthur Harrington said smoothly as I approached, his voice dropping into a patronizing baritone while stepping slightly in front of his wife. "I am surprised to see you in public so soon after your family’s... unfortunate legal troubles."

The circle of politicians and donors fell completely silent, sensing the storm about to erupt.

"I didn't come here to discuss Ethan, Mr. Harrington," I said, loud enough for every guest nearby to hear clearly. "I came to ask Mrs. Harrington how my daughter is recovering from her third heart surgery."

A collective gasp echoed across the surrounding tables. Eleanor Harrington dropped her champagne glass; it shattered against the polished marble floor, splashing sparkling wine across her designer gown.

"You're out of line, Claire," Arthur hissed, his polite mask slipping to reveal venomous eyes. "You don't know what you're talking about. Security!"

"Don't bother calling security, Arthur," Julian intervened, stepping up and holding up a tablet displaying high-resolution scans of the Maine clinic ledger. "These documents have already been forwarded to the United States Attorney's Office and the Department of Child Protective Services. Your wife signed a receipt for a stolen infant under falsified death decrees provided by Ethan Vance."

"Arthur, please!" Eleanor suddenly broke down, clutching her husband’s sleeve, tears streaming down her pale face. "I told you she would find out! I told you this was wrong!"

"Be quiet, Eleanor!" Arthur snapped, his face turning purple with rage.

"She’s my baby, Eleanor," I said, stepping closer to her, ignoring Arthur completely. My voice softened, appealing mother to mother. "Ethan lied to you. He told you I was dead, but I am standing right here. You saved her life, and I am grateful for that with every fiber of my soul. But she belongs with her brother. She belongs with me."

Eleanor looked at me, her eyes filled with agonizing grief and maternal guilt. "She... she looks just like you, Claire. She has your smile. Every time I looked at her, I felt the weight of my sin."

"Eleanor, not another word!" Arthur barked, grabbing his wife’s wrist roughly. He turned back to me, his voice a low, threatening growl. "You think you've won, Claire? Even if you expose this, Ethan signed a binding legal release before the child took her first breath. You will be in probate litigation until that girl is eighteen years old. You will never hold her."

"That's where you're wrong, Arthur," a familiar, booming voice echoed from the ballroom entrance.

We turned to see Uncle Richard walking in, accompanied by the Special Agent in charge of Ethan's federal case. And beside them, in handcuffs, was Ethan’s personal attorney, holding a sealed steel lockbox.
