Chapter 7 - The Empire Fractures

The fall of Ethan Vance was neither quiet nor dignified.
By late afternoon, the news of his termination had hit the Bloomberg terminal, sending Vance-Sterling stock into a temporary nosedive that only stabilized when Julian issued a joint press release announcing my appointment as interim Chairwoman.
I didn't stay to watch Ethan pack his things. I went back to St. Jude’s, back to the tenth-floor room where Maya was sleeping in her acrylic bassinet, her little chest rising and falling beneath the soft blue monitor lights.
Caleb was waiting by the door, his eyes wide. “Did you do it?”
“He’s out,” I said, sinking into the armchair with a ragged exhale. The adrenaline that had kept me upright on Madison Avenue was finally draining away, leaving my body trembling with exhaustion. “Every single board member voted to strip his credentials.”
“Then you need to see this,” Caleb said, pulling up the hospital’s internal CCTV system on his tablet. “About an hour ago, Suite A had a visitor.”
I looked at the screen.
The footage showed Ethan storming into Serena’s room, his tie completely undone, his face twisted in a mask of manic fury. The sound was grainy, captured by the corridor security mic, but every word came through with brutal clarity.
*“You lied to me!” Ethan’s voice shrieked through the speaker. “You told me the Zurich clinic confirmed the genetic match! You took five million dollars of my money!”*
*“I didn't lie!” Serena screamed back, her voice hysterical. “The clinic told me it was an anonymous donor from their top-tier registry! You told me you didn't care whose eggs they were as long as Claire’s name was on the legal intake! You wanted the trust money, Ethan! Don't you dare put this on me!”*
*“You stupid bitch!” Ethan roared, the sound of glass shattering echoing through the hallway. “They’re charging me with grand larceny! The board just fired me! I have nothing! Do you understand? Nothing!”*
*“Then get out!” Serena shrieked. “Get out before I tell the police that you paid Dr. Cole’s supervisor fifty grand to pull the surgical team from Claire’s floor!”*
I froze.
Julian, who had just walked through the doorway behind me, reached over my shoulder and tapped the screen to pause the footage.
“What did she just say?” Julian asked, his voice dead and dangerous.
“Play that back,” I whispered, my heart slamming against my ribs like a caged animal. “Play it back right now.”
Caleb rewound the clip ten seconds.
*“...before I tell the police that you paid Dr. Cole’s supervisor fifty grand to pull the surgical team from Claire’s floor!”*
Julian looked at Caleb. “Who is Dr. Cole’s direct supervisor?”
“Dr. Henderson,” Caleb whispered, his face turning gray. “Chief of Obstetric Services. He was the one who signed the administrative reassignment order this morning. He told Cole it was an executive directive from the board.”
“It wasn't an executive directive,” I realized, cold horror crawling up the back of my neck. “It was a paid hit.”
Ethan hadn't just been careless. He hadn't just prioritized Serena out of vanity or arrogance.
He had paid fifty thousand dollars to guarantee that no doctor would be available to perform an emergency C-section when my uterine wall ruptured. He had calculated the exact window of time it would take for Maya’s heart to stop, ensuring that by the time an outside team could be summoned, it would be too late.
It wasn't medical negligence.
It was attempted murder.
Julian pulled his phone from his pocket, his knuckles white. “I’m calling the Police Commissioner directly.”
“Wait,” I said, raising my hand.
Julian stopped, his jaw tight. “Claire, he tried to kill you and your child. We don't wait for administrative filings anymore. This is a manhunt.”
“If you call the Commissioner now, Henderson will destroy the bank records,” I said, the fury inside me burning away every shred of fatigue. “We need Henderson’s phone. We need the text messages proving Ethan paid him the bribe before the surgery began.”
“How do we get that?” Caleb asked.
I looked at the young nurse, then at Julian.
“Henderson doesn't know Serena just spilled the secret on a hot mic,” I said. “He thinks Ethan is still the powerful CEO who will protect him. We have thirty minutes before Ethan realizes what Serena said and calls Henderson to clean up the trail.”
I reached for the bedside phone.

“Connect me to Chief Henderson’s private office,” I told the hospital operator. “Tell him Mrs. Vance wants to discuss his severance package before the press conference.”
