Chapter 9 - The Ghost of Lawrence Carter

An hour later, the Maybach tore through the empty, rain-slicked streets of the financial district, heading toward the Carter-Moretti corporate headquarters—a fifty-story monolith of dark glass towering over the Thames.
In the back seat, Leo was still fast asleep, resting his head safely in my lap. Dante sat beside us, his hand resting reassuringly over mine. The tension between us had shifted, replaced by an unbreakable, forged-in-fire alliance. We weren't just former lovers haunted by the past; we were partners in a war for our family's survival.
"The building is locked down for the night," Dante said, looking at a tablet displaying the building's schematics. "Julian’s executive suite on the forty-fifth floor holds the physical server banks containing the master archives of the merger that stole your father's estate. If we upload the decrypted ledger from this flash drive directly to their main terminal, it will trigger an automated SEC and Interpol audit that will freeze all their assets within five minutes."
"And Victoria?" I asked, gripping the edge of my seat.
"Victoria is currently at the central police station," Dante replied coldly. "She thinks she’s won. She thinks she’s trapped us. Which means the penthouse at the headquarters is completely empty of their primary leadership, save for a skeleton crew of private security."
The car glided into the underground parking garage, slipping past the security gates using a cloned frequency transmitter.
As we stepped out into the damp, echoing concrete of the garage, the elevator doors opened ahead of us. Viktor and two armed operatives stepped out, securing the perimeter.
"All clear, Boss," Viktor grunted. "We have elevator access straight to the executive floor."
We rode the private glass elevator up in silence, watching the glittering lights of London shrink beneath us until the Thames looked like a ribbon of black ink. When the doors slid open on the forty-fifth floor, we stepped out into a vast, minimalist expanse of white marble, modern art, and floor-to-ceiling windows.
Julian’s office was a shrine to corporate greed—massive mahogany desks, leather seating, and a private wet bar.
Dante walked straight to the main executive terminal, plugged the encrypted flash drive into the port, and began entering a complex series of decryption keys.
Suddenly, the overhead lights flickered and turned crimson. An automated security voice droned from the ceiling speakers: *“Intrepid alert. System breach detected on Floor 45.”*

The heavy steel security shutters slammed down over the glass walls, trapping us inside.
